As soon as I walk into the shed where the feed is the little scratch heads all start sqwaking and running around even though they are being weaned off the stuff and lossing there winter fat they still think maybe he will give us some candy so they shadow me like crazy.

Thanks so very much for the kind words. I have been playing the entire scenario back in my mind... beating myself up with all the should have's and could have's. I sincerely didn't realize he was so stressed... I would have brought him in the house with me to keep an eye on him if I'd had any idea. He was a huge boy... a beautiful bird. I think the girls will be fine in the housing I've set up for them but I will keep a very close eye on them... thank goodness I work from home and my studio is just a short walk to them. Thanks again Henry.

No problem birds are strange creatures its not your fault. I feel like when you said he was a huge bird he may have been very fat and fat birds get heat stressed much more easily and can be affected much more then a normal bird by the heat. There is no way you could have known you didn't know his background or anything! It just breaks me up to hear about it hope you can find another boy.

Henry

Sorry to hear about your lost. maybe Pam or I can help you out in the fall.

Thank you so much Dick. I really appreciate that you would offer to maybe help me out in the fall. I have been dreaming of favs in blues, blacks and splash - so losing this roo was very sad.
I am happy to report that the 2 girls are doing great. They are eating and drinking... and they seem happy in their set up. I made sure to set them up in a place where they would have plenty of shade to keep cool.

Thanks Henry.
I collected my first egg from the girls. I guess it won't hurt anything to try and hatch them... who knows we might get lucky.
All of my chickens are piggies. They see me and come running to the gate to meet me. I pretend they are happy to see me... but I know it's all about the food

Ya try and hatch them! I have 6 eggs from my new black hen and Cindy's blue hen! I am going to try and hatch them and hopefully I get some nice chicks I am hoping for some blues and a few blacks as I already have three splash pullets coming up that I got from Leisha when they start laying I will have a great oppertunity to make lots of blue favs as I have a black rooster.

I was telling my hubby about hoping for a roo out of these eggs and he looked at me like I was crazy because usually I'm all about hatching girls

My fav hens are a splash and a black... so if I get some to hatch I would get blues and blacks... since the roo I lost was black. Eventually, I would love to get some blues... with blues (roo and hen, that is) you get every color - blue, black and splash - to me that makes for some super fun hatching - you have the element of surprise!

For now though, I will be pleased as punch if I get any of these eggs to hatch.
The girls were doing great this morning... we had a big thunderstorm with loads of rain last night... gosh, I wonder when I will stop worrying about them. They are very sweet girls and are really warming up to me... of course, the lettuce I gave them last night helped that right along.
I hope you have a fantastic hatch and get lots of beautiful blue hens Henry.

Absolutely, I'm hoping the rain will clear up in a bit so I can get some pics today... and I promise to share!
... I'm late (again) on my weekly chick pics. I have had a real bad case of the hatching bug this year! Hatching out pretty much everything I get my hands on... oh my. I have been taking weekly pics of the chicks so we can watch them grow... it started as a 4H project for my son and I to do together... but, I have to admit I am really loving it. It is pretty neat to look back and see how much they change - even just over the course of a week. At first I thought I'd be able to tell them apart since I spend so much time with them... but I had to order little foot tags - some weeks they really change a great deal. If I'm able to hatch some of these fav eggs... I will take weekly pics of them as well... fingers and toes crossed!

She looks just like my "Gracie" , her sister "Gertie" is a breeding reject. She came in the mail with only 4 toes .....she is lighter in color on top. But I still love her as she is cute! Reject or not.
The Hatchery did refund my $$ for her , no questions asked.
