Thanks Dick! Wanted to at least make dure that I made them big ENOUGH. I've supplies for either:
A - 8 2x2 cages
B - 6 2x2 and a 2x4 (for cock bird) and breeding??
Or
C - 4 4x4 with 2 girls going in each and cock in his own.

I'm not stuck on 2x2 just going with convenience. Floor will be a piece of plywood so trying to be economical and not waste space or materials.

I love my Faverolles, But I have to agree on the Egg size, Mine are LF, and have only been Laying for about a month and a half, and the eggs are between 35 grams- 42 grams, which is small.
Will the eggs get bigger in time? I was hoping for at least Medium eggs 50 grams +also How long will thay lay for (how many years)?

My first Favs hatched last September, and started laying close to 20 weeks, with small eggs. Now, at 13 months old, their eggs are much bigger-same size as my Marans. The hatching eggs I got from Dick were Huge!

Thanks for the info. I think I may get Delawares instead. But the faverolles is very cute! Kind of reminds me a bit of an EE in the head area.

Are you getting Delewares from a hatchery? If so they are going to be poor quality skinny little things as well as mean as snakes. Just warning you.

Henry

Hmmm... I will think about it some more. I have some assorted layers (6), but I want to devote to a breed. I don't know how to get my chicks from anyone other than a hatchery, or the tractor supply store, which gets them from a hatchery. Also, I read that the Favs have been bred down. I want a good solid chicken with a nice calm temperament. I want a chicken that will know me from day to day, and will not squable with youngsters over the food. Also, I never want to be with out a rooster, and so I want one that will not get mean with age. Also, a good size egg equal to the size of a grade A in the store. (that is DH's requirement, not mine.

) BTW thanks for the stearing comity. You guys are great!

Yeah I think a lot of it depends on age . All the eggs I saw at Dicks were large but all of his hens were 2+ years old.

Non hatchery birds can be found on this site they are often much better tempered then hatchery stock.

What do you mean by bred down? In my opinion almost all hatchery birds have been bred down. The hatcheries do not select for anything other then egg laying and the hens often become egg bound and die after 2 or 3 years. If you want a long lived flock buy chicks or hatching eggs from a breeder. You don't need show stock but just a good healthy long lived productive parent flock.

Well, remember, chickens have as many different temperaments as people. All breeds squabble - that's just being a chicken. Among the breeds in my coop, the favs are the sweetest, and least likely to squabble. That being said, one of the fav hens walloped another one for setting to close to her tonight at bedtime. (It's the most wallop-prone time of the day - don't ask me why) The roo is the sweetest little roo I have ever had. That doesn't mean that you won't ever get a cranky roo - it happens in every breed. This is a breed I am so, so happy to have found, and I would recommend the bantys for even small children for their gentleness. One of the little pullets comes right up to me every morning to be petted, then goes on her way. This breed meets your requirements on everything but possibly egg size. I don't know where you read that the favs have been bred down, but none of the people on this thread will supply birds like that. Learn from my mistakes, and wait for the right birds from a good breeder - you'll never be sorry.

Hi:

I have 15 pullets and two cockerels.

The boys aren't even TRYING to crow yet, and one of them pulled the old "squat for the rooster" posture when I walked up behind him today.

No eggs yet, either.

They are 24 weeks old today.

Any idea when I will see some gender-specific behavior out of these cuties?

They're adorable, but some of the flightiest birds I've ever owned. It makes for an entertaining time when watching them - they startle at a leaf fluttering down from a tree or an acorn hitting our sheet metal roof.

Hi Trisha!

Are you sure you have cockerels? I don't see any in the pics you posted. Your girls should start laying any time now I would think. Mine started sometime around 26 weeks I believe.
