What do they do with all the chickens? Do they sell them for people to eat?

culling doesn't always mean to kill. most times people will sell off the ones that don't make the breed standards they are looking for. LF favs might be killed for meat since the breed is considered dual purpose. the hens will still be useful for someone that just wants them for the eggs and don't plan on breeding.

Exactly

Oh, they also call giving chickens to other people you don't want culling?

hi all,
i have a 3 week old salmon fav chick and i really want to know if it is a roo or hen. it may be still too early but i'm going to try. it has just started to feather in and i see dark salmon feathers on the back but i also see dark gray almost black feathers on the chest and neck. the feathers on legs are gray too. the comb in the past couple days has gotten pretty red as well. this is the only chick that hatched so i have nothing to compare it with. i'm thinking roo but hoping hen. i don't know how well the pics will show since it is not a very friendly bird and was hard to photograph. i appreciate any feedback from you experts. thanks for looking

I have a question for the faverolle people.

I unintentionally made a faverolle breeder very upset recently. I was going to buy some chicks and was very excited about it. I could only get 2 or 3 and they had to be females because I cannot keep roosters here in suburbia. That's one of the reasons I was drawn to the salmons. I mentioned to the breeder that I would probably be able to pick out the females from the males when I selected my chicks (I've done my homework on them, which I thought would make someone who liked a certain breed happy...) and I was told that I was no longer allowed to buy the chicks, wasn't welcome, and that he 'didn't want anyone to show up here and think they could just pick out pullets'.

I certainly didn't mean to offend this person. I had no idea that this would be offensive. It's a sex-linked variety, for crying out loud. I was kind of flabbergasted, to be honest. I did send a message of apology back - but not without saying that I was a little upset with that response. It felt like he thought I was trying to scam him or something! I have not heard anything back from him.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask if this was common - is it wrong to do this? I've been at feed stores and farm swaps and all manner of places where people actively try to pick out the girls from a bucket of straight run chicks. No one sees it as rude! I was just shocked about the whole thing. I would appreciate some input.

He might have been trying to sell you boys and, knowing that you could tell the difference, no longer wanted to sell them to you. I can't think of any other reason he would act like that. ):

Some people don't want to sell just pullets. They will sell pairs or trios. Could be a possibility. Sounds to me like he was the one that's rude.
