Mine were breeders, out in a breeding pen plenty of shade and air moving around them.
What puts the icing on the cake is my wife just got the this quad (rooster and 3 hens) from Bill Karcher (Eagles Nest) last week.

Chris

Interesting...yeah...the large fowl I had were very nice....a pair of whites and a pair of salmons...all full-sized, from good stock. They had plenty of shade and fans, too...and an insulated/heated coop. They seem to just be genetically weak? I don't know? I have had some hardiness issues (cold weather) with my bantam Houdan as wellr but the LF Creves are doing great. Never lost a single one of those...*knocks on wood*

So who knows? I am just super bummed because they are so stinkin' cute. Maybe next year I'll try bantam Ameracuanas instead?

Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck with them Heather!

What is the big brother? Pretty Favs:)

Thanks! Their big brother is an EE/silkie mix. He is kind of a loner but took to the Favs when I brought them home. He clears off an other chickens that perch where the favs usually perch every night still an then he will perch beside them once he is sure no one else is close to them!

Hello Heather, Am so sorry about your lovely Favarolles. N.Eastern Washington does have greater weather swings than our side.... I love mine and have had a few losses through the last 4 years. I noticed they are not the best, particularly bantams for mixed groups. They seem to stress and are easily intimidated, not so pushy as others breeds may be or fight back as others might..... I just lost a bantam roo because i had him in with a fav. mix hen with chicks.( Not Blue-Jeanine)...i realized too late that she was a great mom but possessive of everything especially water( father Fav./mom java mix). He had good weight but when it got warmer, she kept him from the water. I also lost a few incubated chicks when i placed them with an established broodies get.....Possibly weren't hardened to the weird hot cold weather wer'e having like hers and wouldn't venture out to eat as easily as the hen hatched, had to bring the remainder back inside under lamp. Same with some Dorking chicks. Read somewhere they like more space than some other breeds...don't know.
Perhaps in general they have become bred too close and we can do with some good outcross blood. I love their personable gentleness as a breed & have had a group with mult LF/Bantam Fav. roos with no problem. I don't think this trait helps with their survival. I hope You don't give up.

Hmmm . . . maybe some of my LF Favs having hatchery blood isn't such a bad thing. I have really been surprised and happy with how well mine handle the weather here in KY, both winter and summer. They also have been surprisingly good foragers. Sorry to hear that you have had such a hard time with them Heather.

I would love to see your EE project! I bet they are gorgeous!!! He is the only one silkie mix that does not have some sort of a poof on the top of his head! He does have the dark skin and feet of a silkie. I have a leghorn/silkie cross that has this poof that he can have stand up at will. It is quite comical looking. Seems if he gets ticked off at someone it stands straight up in the air. LOL
