Faverolles Thread

Please Help!!!! When I went down to tuck the chickens in tonight, I noticed all 3 of my baby Salmon Faverolle hens have something on their chests. It feels like a big air balloon on the front of their chests. They are only about a week and half old. Does anyone know what is wrong with them. Does anyone know what I should do, are they dying?

Did they just get done eating? Maybe their crop is full. If it isn't down by morning then it could be sour or impacted crop. What did it feel like? Sour crop feels like a water filled balloon and impacted crop feels very firm and hard. It kind of sounds like it could be sour crop if it felt more balloony (I know that isn't a word but didn't know how else to describe it).

I'd go with that. My girls can be real pigs. Their crops at bedtime are twice as big as their heads.

Yep, mine too! Then I worry and they are down by morning! The little stinkers!! LOL
I have been wondering how things are going with the new roo for you!!!

if you are looking at them face on and it is on the left side it is their crop. they are little 'piggies' when they are young and it is noticeable at that stage. if they are acting normal then i wouldn't worry about it much. check them again in the morning and if it has gone down it is more than likely their crop was full from eating and nothing serious just like the others said.

Well I give them their food first thing in the morning. They have their container with food all day and eat as they want. It isn't hard, it felt ballooney. It really didn't feel on them to much I was scared of hurting them. So if it isn't not down in the morning what should I do? They are little piglets and I am hoping that is all it is. Thanks everyone for the help.

Umm, who are you asking about the new roo? I don't think you are talking to me but, I do have a new Salmon Faverolle roo. He is 3 months old and he is doing good and a real sweety.

Well it seems so swollen that it was on the whole top of their chests. Okay, I am just gonna cross my fingers and hope for the best. If it is still swollen in the morning any advice on what I should do is very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Michelle

Feel their crop in the morning and see how it is. If it is still just as big and has that balloon feeling, then it could very well be sour crop. When I treated mine for sour crop, I held food for 24 hours and only gave them water. I put Apple Cider Vinegar in their water. This helps to stop the yeast from growing in the crop. I use the organic one called Braggs. It has the "Mother" in which is what you want.
It will be hard to not give them food for that long and I did give in and give food earlier for mine and I had to start all over again the next day. So just do the water and the ACV for the first 24 hours. I also massaged the crop several times a day to help get things moving and out of there. After the 24 hours and if the crop feels more like an empty crop start by giving them yogurt. This helps put the good bacteria back into their GI system. If all goes well, you can then progress to the chick feed and see how that goes.
Let us know how the little ones are doing in the morning!!! I hope it was just a full crop!!! If it feels empty tomorrow morning, then you don't need to do all of this for a sour crop.

Nope, sorry. I had quoted Mary's post and was asking her.
