Faverolles Thread

My Favs seem to have taken a little dirty road to growing up instead of the high way. I suppose they go in spurts like everything but their personalities are developing and I enjoy chicken personalities.

While my birds aren't pets with collars and outfits they do start out similarly until they become eggers or breeders. I like that these have learned to associate my voice and hand with food. The lightest pullet comes to my hand curiously and the boy is still haughty. If he gets a name it will be a pompous one, like Brutus or similar. lol

I really enjoy the pictures of others birds.

I don't have any pictures. Here is their description:

Mahogany Faverolle (CB): A colorful Faverolle where the males are a partridge color and the hens are a rich mahogany brown color, pale brown eggs. They have a medium size single comb. These came to me as a selection from a hatchery which is now out of business. They are thrifty and productive, but do not have an ancient history. This breed is not yet listed in the APA Standard

And their website

http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/index.html

They do not aim to produce SQ birds, nor do they claim to do so. Some of their breeds are closer to SOP than others. While I suppose you could include them in the hatchery list they aren't anything like Ideal, Meyer, etc. Their goal is to preserve a genetic base, not just of poultry but seeds, roots and sweet potatoes. My understanding is their mahoganies need a lot of work to get them to the SOP, however they are at least preserving the genetics. They tend to all their birds themselves, unlike many hatcheries that get their eggs offsite.
Hello Liesha & All, I have a Sandhill Mahogany rooster and girl from one year and one hen from a second year. As youngsters they were very teddybear like. I have a hard time figuring out the picture thing here but if i can will try sometime today.....The male is fairly decent, toes need major improvement(five but not well defined), Not quite as blocky as most Salmons....lovely red/orange/brown coloration over black and similar to the pic of Your(Liesha) Rooster posted way back on this thread). The 2 girls, both are more light brown, not salmon, one with a white beard and the other with darker brown beard. This coming year i will breed specifically with each to see what comes. I bred a general hatch that had a fav & fav cross and am watching 8 youngsters with good feet and decent form
Earlier on this thread Mahogany specifics came up...it would be nice to have both color phases as we know so far. The lighter orange and the darker red orange.....Also i like both the white and the dark hen beards but don't know how the coloration relates the Roo i have. Wonder if Sandhill would grant us a general pic of their Mahogany group to see the color diversity.

There are a few others here that have a few. When they start laying again i will separate the 3 from others and if anyone wishes eggs would be willing to send for postage cost so others can hopefully work on and improve.
www.feathersite.com has a pic of a Mahogany pair that looks similar to mine....

I have no idea what movie you would be referencing. My daughter named the girls. Think Greek mythology. Echo, Persephone, Andromeda.
Though I see her every day, Persephone must be in Hades at the moment because the earth sure isn't fruitful! But my chickens are

Some people I know got rid of a Golden Comet because it was aggressive toward people (don't know how it fared with the other chickens). Point being, each chicken is an individual.

My girls all came in the same box from Ideal Poultry, 2 days old. Whatever pecking order they have evolved without introducing new personalities into the mix. In "sort of" order, I would rank them (bottom to top):
Cubalaya - if for no other reason that they are smaller than the other girls by a fair bit
Chantecler
EE - Pretty much the gentle giants of the flock
______ I really don't see much difference between the girls in the above group

Australorp - These girls are pretty docile as well but Zorra is as big or bigger than the EEs so I think the 2 below just kind of recognize that size DOES matter. And Echo doesn't seem particularly aggressive, but she'll push in to get the treats.
Faverolle
Ancona

Mixed bag I guess. My Salmon Faverolles are not the pretty white and light brown of the breeder birds you see here. They have a lot of black and dark brown, sort of smutty looking. But they are laying eggs and that is why I got the chickens.

Bruce
Hi Bruce, i have a couple that i picked up from the feed store last year (Privit Hatchery stock?) and they are very similar.....Actually think they are kinda pretty, but was always a appaloosa lover anyway VBG....My very first were hatchery(Cackle and Ideal) and they were color true, somewhere along the line seems that the color thing changed with some hatcheries. I just like to see how they turn out but don't breed them. eliz

Are any of you in or near Ohio? In research mode here. :) What could I expect to pay for faverolles chicks, pullets, cockerls? Don't need show birds but wanting healthy stock that look like the birds are suppose to with nice temperments. :) Not looking to buy right now. Shooting for late Feb early March.

Hey guys I think I am going to register and possibly show two pullets at the poultry congress. Heard there are supposed to be a good amount of faverolles there.

I haven't decided if I'm going to Massachussettes or to Georgia
You should come over to Mass. I would love to see you and your birds. Plus it would be fun to have a little faverolles get together there. If you say your coming I will get ontop of my stuff and get these birds tested and enter a pullet or two and possibly a cockerel.
