Faverolles Thread

This is nice for You to bring this up so it can be clear, especially since i would LOVE to have some of Yours too regardless. I have never formerly spoken with Dick and have dealt directly with Keesmom since i have the ones that she had minus the ones lost in the mail that were to go to Jeanine. I do not have age information on this group or know if they have the blue factor or just black. I don't know if Dick has blacks anymore, I have seen 2 pics posted dated Dec. 2012, that showed a Black, Salmon and a few beautiful Mahoganies, but could have been taken much earlier.

Yes, Jeanine decided to begin her own LF line after it being so hard to come across the blacks and losing the 2 black hens ( and Dicks last whites) from Dick from keesmom in the mail. I am sorry i do not know how she is going about it. She does have a few bantam Blacks. I haven't seen her on this thread for awhile.

For those of You not familiar re the postal loss.....Am not sure what was finally determined, but we think that they were sent at the same time with a shipment of dry ice. All the birds died but one white fav. hen. My group was sent later and greatfully came alive.

We never were able to find out the exact cause of the deaths, but dry ice is the most likely explanation.

I think your blacks will be 2 this season. I'm not sure if they came from an all black pen or a BBS pen. However unless one happens to be a really dark blue you won't get any blues from them.

You had sent them very carefully...but again the thought to always ask if dry Ice will be a part of the cargo.

Thanks, i never thought to ask their age til now....no, they are black, black, black, vbg

Unfortunately at this end there is no way to contact FedEx about live shipments like there is in other parts of the country. Some people have a number to call ahead of time to make sure a flight is available. My postmaster tried every avenue to get one but struck out. Same goes for when birds don't arrive on time. No way to find out where they are.

getting my chicks in march 25 2013 we are getting...5 barred plymouth rocks,5 salmon faverolles and last but not least black stars

Henry seems to have the same info I do about what and where. As for the mites and lice the easiest thing I found after struggling with all the dust and what not (I got both at about the same time when a new bird came in with BOTH-- nasty little biters) is that using the Ivermectin pour on worked and was fast. I put a drop under each wing and legs and one on the tail if I was really paranoid which I was a few times for some birds. If its a crested breed put a drop up there too. Then treat again in about 100-14 days. Its fast acting and gets out of their systems. Frontline lasts longer. Vaseline and other suffocating oils will work on leg mites. You also have to clean the coop thoroughly. Hay and what not out and like N8ivetxn says you should treat your roost bars with oil or bleach or something. Or just replace it. Lime the areas well, DE too if you want, and then be vigilant. These mites used to bite me. The lice were just plain gross but they didn't bite me. The mites did and they looked like black versions of the Red Spider Mite. Gack is right!
Eprinex is just another name for Ivermectin pour-on..... I usually keep it handy because I also use it on my miniature cows :) Worm everybody at once with the same thing and then anotate it on the calendar....very easy. I worry a lot about parasites becoming tolerant to our favorite drugs, so I try to only use Ivermectin once a year.

FYI, I would be afraid to use lime around the birds. It can cause skin burns and blindness if it gets in the eyes.... I know a lot of people here have effectively used DE, but I honestly couldn't tell it did squat

However, I still leave a large pan of it in the run, in case somebody decides to dust bathe in it.....

Yeah, the mites were awful, they do bite! Horrible things, makes my scalp crawl thinking about it!

Aaah, I stand corrected, 2x

That's strange. I actually googled Eprinex last night to check and see.....all I got was stuff about Ivermectin pour-on.

By "agricultural lime," you mean the stuff I spread all over the pasture year after year just to have the rains leach it all out? I didn't know you could dust with that.....Is it as effective as using the garden and poultry dust? Maybe it's time for a change!

Eprinex is not quite the same as ivermectin; it is a closely related product. Eprinex, however, has a zero withdrawal time whereas ivermectin does have a withdrawal period. There is hydrated lime and agricultural lime. Hydrated will burn; agricultural will not.

Besides having very good coop management in regards to through cleaning, powdering bedding, spraying roosts with every coop cleaning, and burning roosts every year and replacing them with brand new (I use cut branches), I use the Eprinex roughly every other month in the summer (mid April- mid October) , and whenever the weather gets above 45 degrees for more then 3 days for Fall/Winter/Spring (but never more then once every 2 months). I alternate it with Fenbendazole if I am concerned with worms, otherwise I alternate w/ Frontline... never have any issues w/ parasites of any sort, and generally do not treat more then 6 times a year. I do offer them DE to bath in, put apple cider vinegar in their drinking water 3 days a week, give bird powder (probiotics) and offer garlic and hot pepper/cayanne pepper in their food when the weather is very cold. I am also interested in using Molly's Herbal wormer again which I tried in the past... but I think these are more of a prevention/synergistic/holistic approach to PREVENTION not a "CURE". I use the "harsh stuff" to hedge my bets and keep the flock from slipping.

Way too often I see posts regarding the holistic/organic methods failing unnoticed until the flock is infested horribly... just don't want my birds to have to go through that...besides the feather footed guys are so prone to leg mites, and just thinking about it makes me super itchy!

Yeah, that's the one - Fenbendazole. That's the one I rotate with. I like your plan Sandiklaws.... I agree about the holistic prevention vs. the medical cure...
