Have been wondering why you can't just take a q tip and swab their throat for a fluid culture to find out if it is an ok sickness or a not ok ......????  eliz

That's a good question. I mean they don't have to cull us to work out what we have when sick do they lol

MS and MG can be detected with a blood test. Not sure on the other respiratory things such as infectious bronchitis, cholera, etc.

If you get your flock tested for NPIP and ask for the extra mg/ms test they will do it. Its what I do. I also have them test for Salmonella and anything else they need to do. Blood test are simple. A stick to the under wing is where they take it. Its fast and easy. Good luck. Also there is a med. for preventing it. I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I had it in one hen, I gave her the med. and she was only mildly pos. for it from then on and never had another active case. I also had all my other hens on it for about a month. No more ever came down with it. Now that hen is gone and I expect a clean flock will be my next report. They will check me next week.

Some testers do not do all the tests. They are not trained or certified. In my case the tests for anything other than NPIP are done by the state ag representative.

I am guessing that the swap culture isn't a test kit that is available. Places like Idexx make the test kits for blood and urine etc and the value of a chicken just isn't the same as the value of someone or someone's dog or cow so the expense to develop the test isn't worth it.

Hey everyone.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the lovely favs are going to be featured this weekend on the CSU thread. Hope to see all you Fav breeders there.

It's the same as any other thread - just post there. However I just noticed the thread is temporarily closed for cleanup. At least I now know whose birds those are!

Hey! How are you? Yes those are my Favs in both of those pics. Needless to say it caught my attention as there was no mention of who they belonged to. This forum is showing me that it is locked and telling me that I need permission from support to post in it????

Right now the moderators have it locked to clean up some of the chit-chat posts. Once they're done the thread will reopen and you can post then. You'll know it's unlocked once that little lock icon at the end of the thread title goes away.
