Faverolles Thread

Before you write him off completely, see if he responds to vitamins. There is something called wry neck that can be caused by a vitamin deficiency, something that a fast growing big cockerel could easily develop.

How can I give them more vitamins? I guess chicken feed is not very nutritional. I was feeding them flock raiser. Does that have less nutritional value?

I did not know those existed, cool!

I like to supplement with NutriDrench, it's a concentrated chicken vitamin supplement sold at most feed stores. another brand is PolyViSol. you can give it in water under regular conditions, for wry neck I would give it undiluted pure form.
here is a thread about wry neck and vitamin deficiency: http://oureggbasket.blogspot.com/2013/04/wry-neck-or-crook-neck-understanding-it.html

I think mine are almost 3 months. Did yours have the ugly splotchy rusty phase?

For a little while his black feathers looked kind of muddy, but now, he has nice black on the body and rust color in his wing/back area. the vanilla colored hackle and saddle feathers are just starting to come in.
to tell the truth, this guy is my FAVORITE! I just think he is soooo adorable, I dont think he ever had an ugly phase

Just like people, animals have idividual nutritional needs. offering a wide variety of foods, with good food values, is always goig to be better tha a sinngle ration IMHO. Personally, I feed my growers on game bird crumbs (higher in protein) from 8 weeks on as a "base", but suppliment them with food scraps, sunshine plus pellets, black oil sunflower seeds, Red Cell for horses, cod liver oil, scratch (so they eat the oil and Red Cell) and sprouted wild bird seed. The more diverse the diet, the better they seem to do. Your cockerel might have a neck injury... but if he is still eating and driking I would give him some poly-sol infant vitamins WITHOUT iron, just put a drop or two in his beak a few times a day- it tastes pretty bad so he will try to fling it out of his mouth, be patient and persistant and wear an old shirt. After a week or so, you should see definitive improvement if this is going to be the fix... if not, you can contine with your plan to cull.

Is there anyone who has LF Buffs or Buff projects in the United States? There is someone in Oregon? Southern Washington (cannot remember) who has the Bantam Buffs that Cloverleaf had from Liesha Comer…….

I know of no one with LF buffs or projects even. There were some bantam buffs in Maine a few years ago and I brought them to Dick. He eventually passed them onto someone locally, not sure if they are still there.

I am currently hatching some favs, but I am looking to grow most of these out for myself to check for type and size. I should have some for sale in a few months once I see how they are turning out, if you are interested in waiting a bit. I am located in Hanford, CA. You can check out my website. Pics of my Favs are under assorted poultry.
