Faverolles Thread

Well, Cloverleaf Farm was sure I had four pullets and a cockerel in the batch I got from her, and it looks like she was right! They are probably brother and sisters, though, so I still have to get some more birds. But I'm waiting until the weather straightens out -- these guys are in a puppy crate in my bedroom, and won't be able to go out for some time yet! Five in my bedroom is one thing, but multiply that and it would be a bit too much!

They are sure cute little stinkers, though!

I'd say that's pretty darn good odds though - one cockerel out of 5!

Pullet
pullet
pullet
and
more pullets LOL!

Yep looks like all pullets!

As for the darker feathered one, it is possible it can go either way but it looks pullet to me!

If you keep hatching out pullets, its a keeper flock! It is RARE to get anywhere 80% pullets out of the existing flock which most of us get overrunned with cockerals.

Beautiful set up!

From the reports I have been getting this is indeed a keeper flock. So far if I remember correctly someone has hatched a quad out, a trio out, and a pair out! So mostly girls. So you guys would suggest I keep the rooster aren't they the ones who determine sex of the chicks?

I could have them in the garage, but it's unfinished, so pretty cold out there -- I'd have to use the heat lamp to keep them warm and it's hard to justify spending that much on electricity for just five babies! In my room, they are doing just great with a gallon jar of hot water that I change when it cools off.

I do plan to get some eggs to hatch from Melissa when some of my hens go broody. I'll also be getting some eggs from Cloverleaf Farm, and later some chicks from another lady up near Portland. That will give me three lines, I think.

ETA: The chicks are in a puppy crate. I put newspaper down in it with paper towels over the top (so they won't get spraddle legs) and change it every day, so the smell isn't too bad, nor is the dust. And they're not nearly as noisy as chicks I've raised before (I usually start even larger batches in my bedroom for the first few days). So all in all it isn't as bad as you might think to have them in there!

Hi everybody I am new to chickens and absolutely fell in love with standard Faverolles. I kind of got excited and jumped the gun and ordered 15 chicks from Cackle hatchery. They are shipping the 31st. I am really interested in breeding and exhibiting birds when I get more experienced but I wanted to find some breeders that would sell started birds somewhere in Oregon. I know my little hatch brats wont be show or breeding quality so I wanted to start searching for some breeders now. I would eventually like to hatch out eggs but right now I don't have the expertise or means to do that. Also If any of you breeders or more experienced people would let me know what the prices are for nice started birds would be, you can post or PM me. Thanks everybody! ~Rachel

Rachel, I don't know about started birds, but there are at least two breeders in Oregon (both over near Portland). Cloverleaf Farm posts on this thread; she's just getting started herself, but has nice birds. There's another lady who won't have anything available until this fall or next spring but she has really nice birds, too -- I can get you her information later (I'm at work). I'll probably (hopefully) start having at least hatching eggs available next year, and I'm getting started with nice stock (I'm south of you, near Klamath Falls).
