I actually prefer the top male over the bottom. He appears to have a better beard and the shoulders and back are more the correct color. Overall type I can't tell as the pose isn't the best.

In my personal opinion The male with the mahogany red on his back is what the standard calls for. I wish I had a male that dark. I feel the lighter one is what most of the judges see around the shows in this country and again, in my opinion will give you better pullets.

Oh good - whew! Thanks! That's what I was hoping for - the second male is more curious/friendly, has been from day 1, but EVERYTHING else about the first one is better, and he's not "naughty" at all, just standoffish. Which is totally fine with me. If he gets any size on him, I might just use that lighter male for showing for a while, and then sell him at some point, because the third male I have is alot closer to the first one than the second.

Yeah, he isn't the most willing to stand there forever for me to take pics, like the other one is! Thanks - it's nice to have multiple opinions telling me I've done the right thing!

Yes, and even though pictures can be deceptive sometimes, it still helps those of us trying to learn when pictures are critiqued. For me its much easier to have things (both good and bad) pointed out on an actual bird than just reading a description of what they are supposed to look like.

Yeah the top boy has really nice wingbow coloring I think. Thats some dark mahogany. I am interested to see how those chicks turn out they have some pretty parents.

Dick, why will the lighter one give you better pullets? I'm still trying to figure out this genetics stuff. Thanks! - Mary

I HAVE THEM!

We are amlost home and they are throwing a fit in the box. Johnathan had all 7 birds with him instead of just the 2 cokrels and 4 hens so now I have 1 extra rooster. I will get pictures as soon as I can. I may have to be in town all day tomorrow.

Okay, I have a question. Has anyone noticed brooder raised babies grow faster/bigger than chicks raised by a broody hen? The two in the picture below are 7 and 8 weeks old. The bigger one is 8 weeks and was hatched in an incubator and raised in a brooder. The smaller is 7 weeks and was hatched/raised by a Silkie hen. Look at how tiny her head is. She is taking forever to get all of her feathers in and so is her hatchmate. I would have thought that the broody hen babies would have feathered in faster as they have had only their mother for heat instead of a heat lamp. This is the first time I have had both brooder raised chicks and broody raised chicks at the same time. Is this a normal occurrence or is this just a weird batch of chicks? All the eggs came from the same hen and rooster. The only difference is that I artificially incubated one batch and let a hen do the work on the other batch.

This second pic is of the cockerels from the same two batches. The bigger boy is the 8 week old and the other three are the 7 week olds. I know chicks grow a lot in a week's time but I would have thought they would be closer in size by this time.
