Faverolles Thread

I just wanted to post that I got my first little Favorelles on Saturday. Two boys and Two girls!!! They are the sweetest little things! I will try to get some pics of them up later!!

We sorted the breeding pens today... Salmon roo over salmon hens and Blue Salmon roo over blue salmon hens. Someone asked me to do this because she wants 'pure' salmon without any blue salmon chicks... So here is the question... We have been breeding together for years and the offspring are always either Salmon OR Blue Salmon... NOT some kind of cross of the two and I always thought that they were a color family like BBS or Wheaten/Blue Wheaten/Splash Wheaten (like they are with my Ameraucanas)... so is this not so and will I now get all Salmon out of the Salmon pen or not? She thinks yes and I think no... but feel free to pop my bubble, LOL!

My new roo is making our most beautiful chicks ever... snowy white beards on the pullets with very clean necks and chests... really, really perfect feet...I was so worried about using him because he has just a hint of waddles showing through his beard but after a year I've never seen one of his chicks with that trait... And no more white sports since I've been using him. I just love him!

Salmon/blue salmon does work like BBS.

salmon x salmon = 100% salmon
blue salmon x salmon = 50% salmon, 50% blue salmon
blue salmon x blue salmon = 25% salmon, 50% blue salmon, 25% splash salmon
splash salmon x salmon = 100% blue salmon
splash salmon x blue salmon = 50% blue salmon, 50% splash salmon
splash salmon x splash salmon = 100% splash salmon

So you haven't hatched any splash salmons? Salmon x salmon can only give you salmon, just like black x black will give black. However it isn't always easy to tell the salmon/blue salmon/splash salmon hens apart. If you do get some blue salmons out of your salmon only pen then you have a blue salmon hen in there somewhere, or a splash! Though splash salmon hens are usually a little easier to spot.

well, he's not a very young chick in this pic but it may help you. he fooled me into thinking he was a pullet with his light coloring at a young age of about 6 weeks. this is my Pixwell as a young cockerel!

he's almost a year old now so his color has really filled in nicely! Keesmom has one very similar to him, but mine has more blue in his tail. he's very sweet and when i thought he was going to be a female i had decided i was keeping him! well, he's a male and i'm still determined to keep him since he's a sweet boy and gets along with almost everyone! follows me around the yard when i let him outside, and he's quiet when he's out there with me!

it was funny when he was a chick and would run through the bars of his dad's pen! dad would just watch them all come running through and not bother them. now Pixwell and his dad get along wonderfully well with each other! i wish i had a larger flock of girls to keep these 2 with since dad has a decent ratio of girls when i've hatched eggs from him! i'm hoping Pixwell has the same ratio when i start hatching eggs from his line!

he does have a weirdly twisted beak (not a scissor/cross) that i attribute to him having a crack in it when he was a month old. not sure if he got hurt from one of my other hens and it healed that way.

Whew! So the chart I've had and been following for eight years is NOT wrong!

Blue Wheaten X Blue Wheaten = 50% Blue Wheaten, 25% Wheaten, 25% Splash Wheaten
Blue Wheaten X Splash Wheaten = 50% Blue Wheaten, 50% Splash Wheaten
Blue Wheaten X Wheaten = 50% Blue Wheaten, 50% Wheaten
Splash Wheaten X Wheaten = 100% Blue Wheaten
Wheaten X Wheaten = 100% Wheaten
Splash Wheaten X Splash Wheaten= 100% Splash Wheaten

I think by her email that she is thinking that Blue Salmon X Blue Salmon is going to also give all Blue Salmon... I wouldn't do this except that she is local and wants to buy all the eggs my chickens lay all summer while it is too hot to ship so it is well worth the trouble. Honestly Keesmom I have never kept a splash chick around long enough to see a grown one from my Faverolles or my Ameraucanas until this year when I threw a bunch of Am. cockerels out on pasture to range and got the most beautiful splash roo. But alas his tail set is too high so he will not be finding a forever home here LOL! I did manage to get my beautiful blue back up roo killed by putting him out to range.

I retired Big Daddy to a nice local home this year and since we've had 'New Guy' over the hens I'm not seeing any more white sports. I still would have liked to breed up a line of them but I am just plain old out of space as far as housing goes. I wish I could have hundreds of chickens but I have to stop at 99

Incase anyone hadn't seen these yet, there are some Faverolle eggs on ebay right now. I figured it'd be spelled wrong after what Chickie'smama said, so I typed in 'Salmon Hatching eggs' and got a lot of results.
