Peter, wasn't thinking that the darker females had to be a bad thing. Was wondering if they helped to maintain color in the family or??? but figured they might have some use.

In my opinion the darker females create better colored cockerels.

I agree with Dick, the darker girls give you richer colored boys.

How rare are faverolles? I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of bantam Salmon Faverolles, and we are into breeding them and growing a flock to show and sell eggs and chicks?

If they are good quality, do it!! I have waiting lists for both my bantams and my large fowl right now, and my list for my large fowl is probably 5-6 months long....

I personally do not pen breed for males and females so whether either direction (light/dark) helps one sex in specific I would not know and as I prefer my birds to be able to produce both sexes I have not ever tried. I don't have double the space for one variety or breed. Others may prefer it and so that is what they do. That is their flock and is why flocks are usually called a private flock.-) Given a fabulous year ('01,02, '03) with my birds I do not keep darker females or males leaning towards claire. In striving to get back to a place with my own flock and blood that produces the extremes, for me lighter females and very rich males, consistently I am once again at a loss for the numbers it takes to get there. Therefore, I am using them. We will see if I'm ever able to regain that ability. I personally like it that way so culling for color is lessened. I'm not a very big fan of helicopter spins or scissors at this point so the less of that the better.
In essence Dave uses for a way off color salmon of either sex on my place are not in abundance. I will have the choice in the future when my young flock gets older and proves what they will produce. I took almost 6+ yrs off of breeding any. So, all of these birds are new and untried to me. The resetting of many characteristics that I lost through out cross blood are getting better and at least I am able to separate the blood the two distinct directions that they came from now.
