Faverolles Thread

I have a few hatchery girls, I should get pics up.... I lost one this summer, heat I think. She had spots. Not on her skin, but her feathering was spotted. I don't know the origin of the spots, but I loved it. She was my "special needs" girl.....

I don't have any bantams :( Although, I have seen some very nice pics on this thread!

I would love to see pics! LF or bantam..I am excited to see what my tiny babies will look like grown up. Will take a while though, those two blues, especially one, is very tiny. I have been watching to make sure it is drinking and eating..*she* is. :D

Are any of you attending the Lucasville Show this coming weekend. I am going as a spectator, but would like to meet some breeders. Since I hatched a couple of Jeanine's eggs this year I was hoping she would be there. Are any of you attending the Ohio Nationals in Columbus?

I was really hoping to be there too, but it just didn't work out financially. :( Leisha will be there....she has entered 19 bantam salmons... that's A LOT of bathing to do!

Quote: There's been a push lately toward getting them back to more of a meat bird, because that's what they were originally bred for, and a lot of the exhibition lines have gotten away from that.

I have eaten a Fav side by side with a Cochin, and there were subtle differences. One probably wouldn't notice it if they weren't side by side, but if you're looking for the differences, they are there. HUGE differences, of course, as compared to the frankenchickens one would buy at the grocery store.... :)

I recently had an experience with one of my Fav pullet bantams. I found her in the corner of the henhouse unable to move, except to flop a little. Closer observation showed her neck felt to be broken or severely dislocated, the neck bone at a sharp angle in one spot. She couldn't eat or drink or right herself. I put her in a carrier and kept her in the house. I worked with her neck a little but not a lot, afraid of causing her more pain. She received water and nourishment, but all told, it didn't amount to enough to keep a canary alive. To my amazement, on the 3rd day, she started trying to sit up and she ate and drank when offered. By the next day, she was well enough to go back to the henhouse in a cage, to recover in company. She seemed to be doing well after a few hours and wanted out so badly to be with her friends, I turned her loose. She had a little trouble walking properly, and turning her neck to eat out of the feeder. But she has kept improving and this morning she is out running with the rest of them, nearly normal. I'm elated and wanted to share. I nearly gave up, having been through this with another bird that couldn't be saved. The moral of the story is not to give up too soon, even when it looks bad.

Ok, jumping subjects: Favorelle egg size? Small, Medium, Large? My pullets just started laying and they are tiny to me but I am used to my exlarge/jumbo production brown layers. Will they get bigger? If so what size/weight should I expect? Thanks!
The SOP says that Favs lay a medium egg. Most of my girls lay a large to XL egg. The average egg out of my main breeding pen is 58-63 grams.

Yes, I will be there. Also Ron and Jonathon Patterson will be there with their LF. I started washing today, will finish the rest tomorrow, so they can put their feathers back in place.

HI All, I enjoy hearing from everyone about their Birds, I have a few nice breeder birds and a few hatchery- some that are decent and some that are just characters with all kinds of markings.....no one should worry about theirs. We each have different ideas of what we hope for and what works for us....Please Piper send us a picture or 2 as your project goes along, one of these days i will get some up of mine....I have a new boy that i really like from Jeanine,(Thankyou !) sweet with attitude, only 4 months??? but as big as everyone here except my biggest hen.

I think sharing allows us to discover the possibilities...

Lovely Boy Leisha, Good Luck to You and everyone going to the show.......
