Yeah I agree on his beard its not the biggest i've seen and he does have a lil brother i will have to get some pics of him also I just have the two Roos and have been trying to decide which one to keep for breeding purposes I love both of my handsome men so it will be hard if i do have to sell one or I might just keep them both and let them free range.IDK a lot about Favs but I like the look of this one. At the risk of sounding like a 'girl' does he have a brother?? lol I thought they should have bigger beards? His breast is great.
Thank you for the input Cloverleaf I just have the two Roos and I am trying to decide which would be the better of the two for breeding purposes I am definately not impressed with this ones beard but my young roo has a beautiful beard i'm just waiting to see how nice he turns out he is about 5 months old and the one in the pic above is approx 2 years so what are the most important things to look for in a good Roo? I am a working progress and am willing to learn as much as i can to do right on the Faverolle breed.Comb's a little bigger than I like in the front, and his wattles are a little bit, but I like how full he looks in the breast. His legs look nice and wide too. Hard to see everything as far as body shape goes from a quartered to shot, but looks pretty good.![]()
Many here know more than I but would think in order of importance,......Conformation, shape, size and bulk....What makes Faverolles what they are...Feet.....attitude-personality...................................combs, beards and coloration are more the icing .......Thank you for the input Cloverleaf I just have the two Roos and I am trying to decide which would be the better of the two for breeding purposes I am definately not impressed with this ones beard but my young roo has a beautiful beard i'm just waiting to see how nice he turns out he is about 5 months old and the one in the pic above is approx 2 years so what are the most important things to look for in a good Roo? When you're selecting your male, you also need to look at your females. What do you need to improve, or move forward, from where you are? Are the girls too dark? Then use the male with lighter coloring. Are the girls too small? Then use the larger male.
Something else you can do, especially since it would be a big help in the learning process, would be to use one male, mark or band all the chicks, then use the other male, and mark or band them differently. You'll see as the birds grow exactly what you'll get from each male, as long as you hatch enough chicks to give you a good representation.![]()
That was Eliz's rooster, but I agree, a pic would've been precious.cloverleaf
I love sweet roo's. I bet a picture would have been beautiful. I may still decide( Even though you are on the other side of the states ) to order eggs from you in late March or April. I am loving the Fav.,s more and more as I read about them too.![]()
Right now I have a mixed flock of linebred hens. OGNH,BR,DEL,AM,ORPS,and Marans. They all get along. I want to keep about 20 in all by next fall. Thats all I will have room to transport in the Falls to the coast of NC where for the next few yrs, I will be during the winters. I am making special boxes for transporting them now. My super sweet hb is building me a nice coop down there and big run.
He's just finished the one here. I am a bit spoiled by him.
I have been living here pretty much full time for many yrs. now. I had a fall and messed up my wrist and arm and my family is afraid for me to be by myself now. My lack of balance is worring them. Actually me too. I see a neuro. Dr. later this wk. gloria jean
So what are your thoughts on hens with Smutty beards? I have noticed they are lightening up a bit as they are getting older but it was one of my concernsMmm...I do think that beards have to go into the first part of that "what makes a Fav a Fav" as well.![]()
