Faverolles Thread

Charcoal is interesting stuff... besides being used in aquarium filters, we military folk are issued chemical warfare suits that have activated charcoal infused into the material to help draw and hold chemicals used against us....

I just noticed that your location says you are in Northwest Arkansas. I live in this area as well and have been trying to find a breeder to get some Large Fowl Salmon Faverolles from. If you don't breed to sell, do you know of anyone that does in our area? I had a faverolle that I really enjoyed and she dropped dead a few weeks ago. I found her dead on the floor of our coup with no visible signs of trauma. All of our other chickens were/are fine. We purchased her from hatchery stock. I definitely won't be doing that again. Any help, information, or advice would be appreciated!
Faverolles have been occasionally known to be easily intimidated by other non favs and end up not getting enough groceries to survive...this may have been the case of your Fav, rather than hatchery or not........or something wrong with her,,,,,,,,eliz

Thanks for the input Eliz. Do you keep yours seperate from other breeds of chickens? Do you think having more food and water stations would help? She was very mild mannered, but I never saw her being bullied by the other chickens. I can't say for sure what happened to her. I was away for a month with my boys and my husband was taking care of all the animals. I hope it wasn't lack of groceries that killed her. Do you know of anyone in the area that breeds them? I would like to get some more in the spring. I don't really want to hatch eggs. I would rather purchase live chicks. If you don't know of any breeders in our area. Is there a good hatchery you could recommend. I have heard people say Sandhill is a good one.

HI, apologize, others here would have a better idea who may be in your area and i do not feel competent to recommend hatcheries....sometimes local farm stores will bring in chicks and if asked in advance (would check now) they may order Faverolles for you along with their regular chick order and you wouldn't have to have the usual 25 minimum. ( I would at least get 2)

My first LF came from both Cackle and Ideal, splitting orders with friends. They were decent at the time with no off coloration, do not remember feet. I kept a son from my original rooster who is in charge of my mixed bird egg group. Good size and color, blocky..... I have ordered from Sandhill, but not for Salmons, only Mahogany Favs. which i think most here are in agreement that they are still in the re-formative phase.

I am continuing to learn but have noticed that with different breeds, like eventually hang out with like whether lots of chickens or a few regardless when they came or who with. I do think more feeding stations would be helpful, and ample room or several roosting options.

I do mix a few so they all get a chance to free range, but the predominant breed is Fav. Even Fav's can *quietly* intimidate Favs.....The best way to make sure everyone is ok, is to pick up once in awhile and feel their weight. If they are too light, something isn't right....but always bring a buddy if i separate to better feed so they don't feel alone.......hope this helps, eliz

Have just had my first hatch session with my Mahoganies. 1 roo,2 hens from Sandhill and 2 1/2 Fav. Crosses. out of 18, 8 have acceptable feet, 4 fairly bad feet and 6 have 4 toes. The 3 nicest colored, muffed and leg fluffed are 4 toed and several of the decent are from the mix hens. Soooo will do another go round to figure who is laying what and do a re hatch before passing eggs on to anyone wishing to work on this coloration.

Lucky you! Now maybe you can try breeding Favs.

This is true... in early July I had an incident. I came home from work and went out to check on the birds - I found my little, under-developed fav roo laying on the ground, in a very strange position. I thought he was dead, but when he heard me he started trying to move.
Anyway, long story short - the vet ran a fecal and said she thought he developed cocci due to being mal-nurished. - The bizarre part is, I have four feeders and 3 water points in the coop and run. I was stunned. Honestly, it's really embarassing to me to even admit this happened

. I just wanted to share how easy it is for birds to get pushed away from groceries...

Eliz is right, the best way to judge whether they get enough to eat is to pick them up and feel of the keel/breast area....
