Yeah, I know what you mean. We can handle no power, but the no water gets annoying after a while. We lost power for 5 days in last year's October snowstorm and were the only ones who didn't have to leave. Wood stove for heat, heavy duty coolers for food outside, rubbermaid tubs full of water.

Yup, know what ya mean....I still have not been smart enough to get a generator yet.....We have a septic pump and a well pump and a freezer......But we do have a creek so can get buckets of water for utility or purifying. And the airtight wood stove kept the house warm and food cooked the 2nd year here when the power and the phone was out for a week and 2 feet of snow. Kept hot water bottles around the water pump....

OK, here you go: Ideal Poultry Faverolle feet.
Of course Anais wasn't willing to stand still so we have some blur, but I'm posting those just so you can see both the front and back ends

As you can see, they aren't the beautiful clear Salmon color of the breeder's birds being posted here and her feet are not nearly as feathered.
20 1/2 weeks.







This one is almost surreal. Not a lot of light and the digital camera isn't the highest quality.




That is Zia (Anacona) next to her. She MIGHT be the supplier of egg #1, laid Friday.
But it isn't really white so maybe another girl was ready first and I'm not recognizing the signs.
Yeah, it is small, but is the FIRST!

I have Ancona's too....They are really pretty.....all my eggs are large white like above....The smaller tinted egg looks Faverolle....Traditionally they are a medium size unless they are from Jeanine's gargantuan line. VBG, eliz

When the DH bought a generator 14 yrs ago, I thought he was out of his mind. That thing just sat in the shed & took up space for years without ever being used. In the past 5 years, that has been a life saver, not only for us, but for when the parents in neighboring towns were without power, they were able to seek refuge @ our house. We have since added a wood stove to the house & nothing warms the soul like wood heat!
Hoping the snow in the upcomming week is nothing severe, winter has been coming too soon for my liking. Have to get the chicken run covered up again today, since Sandy removed 1/3 of the plastic that was on it.

Maybe those close to or already laying will have found it by the time I drag my lazy butt out in the cold. 9 AM, 33F and spitting snow this morning. The girls don't have a lot to do in the coop so maybe they'll explore the new hole in the wall above the "perch" I put in last weekend.

We've not gone that route yet though I know some people that were without power for a couple of weeks during the ice storm a decade or so back. They went full tilt with a generator hooked into the house service panel. My in-laws used to lose power a lot decades ago and had an old WWII generator that automatically kicked on when the power dropped. Service has been pretty reliable of late, though it did go out Friday night about 10, but then being in the NW corner, we've missed the biggies - Sandy last week and Irene (Oh Irene you nasty little %$$!) last year.

Have to get the chicken run covered up again today, since Sandy removed 1/3 of the plastic that was on it.

Only a third? That isn't too bad. Winds not TOO high on Tuesday? I'm not sure I can put plastic on the chickens' outdoor run. We get some pretty stiff winds and it is nothing more than chicken wire on T-posts. My guess it the first time the wind starts ripping, it will all get blown away.

You are all depressing me with your s-o- talk. Ugh. My little Fav trio has been out for the last week. Today is pretty harsh with the wind but they are out there enjoying the room to try all their chicken fu moves. Given the information I have read in here about being less aggressive etc I am concerned about housing them with any of my other birds. I have decided to put them in with my only two bantams who are generally very sweet. I am hoping that their similarity in size and the banties easy going nature will make it easy enough for the Favs to eat enough and have company that isn't going to kill them or harass them too badly.

I did go back and look at the cockerel. He seems to have a sparse beard but I can't tell if it isn't coming in or is just coming in. Is it a common trait for the Favs to not develop beards?

Yes, only 1/3 of the plastic went bye bye, my DH got the rest of the roof covered up today. We staple it & then screw a piece of wood strapping over the edge to give an extra layer of grip. It has worked remarkably well in the past. I was betting all the plastic would have gone during Sandy, but only the 1 piece broke loose. It looks like another big nor'easter is coming thru Wed/Thurs, so we'll see how it holds up thru that storm. The winds were pretty strong here for Sandy, a few trees came down, but nothing like what they went thru in NY & NJ. Praying for those folks who went thru all that last week, & hoping this weeks storm isn't bad.
