I want a breed that has a small comb, lays well, and comes in an interesting and cheerful color. I like some pattern, I don't find solid colors as attractive. Also, it should be possible to obtain a rooster that doesn't like to kill people.

I love the Golden Campine breed. PERFECT color in an interesting pattern! But, I really don't want to worry about that big single comb freezing off.

I thought that the Marsh Daisy was pretty, not as bright and cheerful as a Campine, but, they do come with a tiny comb. However, you can't get them in the USA. (Maybe I should add that I really was thinking that my chick cost limit should be $15 not $300 or more! )

So, could everyone post what their favorite cheerfully colored chicken breed is?

It needs to be available in the USA at $15 or less for a straight run chick. It would be nice if it were available from breeders instead of hatcheries.

Brahmas
- small pea comb
- large, heavily feathered
- gentle mellow nature, including the males
