Favorite Rooster, Friend

What a beautiful and rare creature he was! I'm so sorry you lost him that way.

I've been a chicken keeper since the 1950's, and have had to put more of them away than I can count, but it only gets harder for me. The older I get, the more I can see into their souls. Nowadays, I start crying from the time I know the job has to be done until several days after it's over with. Call me a girly-man if you like; for me, that is a badge of honor.

Now I'm weeping for Fluffy, too.

So sorry for your loss!

I remember seeing that picture before. Not sure if you posted it on here or if I saw it in the magazine?? I just remember what a cutie-patootie your DD was and how he was almost as big as she is! (Along with being so calm and laid back about it all)

That is such a shame.

Glad you were strong enough to put him out of his misery. It is a really hard thing to do.

Thanks everyone. Got home from working a double last night and fed the dog right at last light. I reached down to get the feed and noticed a nice one coiled up about 12 inches from my foot. NOT REAL HAPPY. I picked up a 2x4, and let him have it. NEVER buzzed.
Hope things turned out ok with Brutus.

We have a cabin in Potter County, PA. We knew a man in his eighties who caught rattlers, extracted the venom, and took them to the schools to educate the children. He had been studying the rattlers most of his life. He told us that in the wild, they ALMOST NEVER rattle before they strike. He said to NEVER step over a fallen tree or log without looking on the other side first, because that is where they like to hide. We had the occasion a few times to see one in the wild, and we did things (safely!) to make them strike, and they NEVER rattled first!

Fluffy was just beautiful!! It's always hardest with the favorites....and they always seem to get in the most trouble for some reason

I had to bury my favorite Golden Comet a few weeks back, I still miss her. Try to think of all the good moments you shared.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know it was hard but you did the right thing. He will be waiting for you on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

I'm so sorry. And no, I don't think it's weird to love a rooster. He sounds like a sweetie.
