my whole flock has favus......I've been treating with tinactin as recommended by others on the forum......it gets slightly better then worse.....I started treating them with metronidazole today Fish-zole......I read somewhere that humans are treated for favus with this medication and it works.....has anyone esle tried this.....has it worked for you?.....its been two weeks with topical treatment and smearing 29 faces every night and not seeing results is frustrating...I really need to hear some positive feed back

Metronidazole is used to treat certain types of bacteria and protozoa. Favus is a fungus, metronidazole is ineffective against it. If Tinactin (fungal spray) has miconazole in it, that should take care of the favus. I know Lotrimin (fungal spray) has miconazole in it. Check the label on your Tinactin and see if there's miconazole in it.

it says tolnaftate?.....That means I've been using the wrong stuff for two weeks.......I am so frustrated right now...All that money spent....a bunch of bald crusty chickens with white combs and wattles....poor sweeties......the knowledge that i am using the wrong meds is just making it worse.....thanks for the info....i guess back to the drug store...SIGH!....

Thanks and I will hang on to the fish-zole.....I am acquiring quite the chicken pharmacy....So glad I found this place....it helps so much to hear from people with experience with all this stuff....I've only had chickens for three years and its only the second time they have an illness other than parasites.....

Thanks again

Tolnaftate is just another anti-fungal, as is clotrimazole. You're not using something totally wrong!! I find that in all of my animals and for hubby & I, the type of anti-fungal can make some difference, but usually not much. I discovered this a long time ago when I couldn't get generic clotrimazole that I wanted so decided to give the tolnaftate a try. The trick with fungal stuff is to keep the treatment going with total regularity and it usually needs a pretty long time. Haven't done this with the chicks, but as alpaca farmers we have way too much experience in this area with various mammals!!

I started them on Miconazole last night...hope i spelled that right lol.....I also added vitamins to the water to give them a little boost.....The Tolnaftate did nothing...I treated them for two weeks and they just kept getting balder and crustier.....I am hoping to see some results with the miconazole cream...I know i won't see results for a few days but i have my fingers crossed....I just wish i knew what caused it.....was it something i did wrong?.....and how to avoid them getting this again
