Fear of fresh eggs?

I too grew up on store-bought white eggs. I even thought brown-shelled eggs were gross. But I always wanted chickens for eggs. Moved out here and a friend gave us some of her eggs. I was wary at first, but when I saw that orange yolk next to a pale yellow from the store, I was hooked.

My kid will eat any kind of egg. Even loved getting little quail eggs! And he's the first to whine when we're out of goat milk.

I was the same way at first. I still am a little bit, I do eat them but I still have a little "creepy" feeling. I would never be able to eat meat from one of my chickens though. They are pets, I even feel a bit guilty for eating chicken anywhere at this point. I certainly don't eat as much as I used to.

I am weird about food anyway. Hubby has always talked about how great goat milk is, so I happened to see some organic local goat milk the other day and he kept trying to give me some. I really didn't want to drink it. It just grossed me out for some reason. The weird thing is that goat cheese is one of my favorite things on the planet. I kept telling myself that but it didn't help. The thought of milk fresh out of the cow grosses me out also. I know it is sooo much better for me but just weirds me out.

I am switching to all ee's this year for eggs because my RIR's are getting too old. I think the quality of the ee eggs I have been getting are better then the rir. The ee's have less blood and meat spots and that is what grosses me out. The ee's yolk is richer and fuller. JMO

Fear of fresh eggs? That's sillier than chicken milk.

I grew up on a farm, we milked 250 cow twice a day. The milk was soooo good... the chickens were my chore and I didn't like it when we culled them. As they were my pets, but when it was time to harvest the pigs it didn't bother me a bit. I didn't enjoy feeding the pigs at all! We grew most all of out own food. Beef, Milk, Chickens, eggs and Pigs..... those were the good days... I have many customers who pay me twice what a grocery store charges and are glad to get them. Most folks who can't taste the difference may be tobacco users, that's been my experience anyway. Tobacco kills your taste buds and you can't smell as well as others. this is from a ex-smoker! me

Somehow when we crack open a blue or green egg, it makes a difference in my "gross factor". Silly, isn't it!? But we do have 6 eggers laying, and more on the way.

Yeah it is....all of us fight for them and our family likes them best. We only have one ee right now so they are scarce. I have not gotten one from that hen in several days now. All my hens usually lay a egg a day. When it started getting cold they went to half as much and just lately like zero to 2 if I am lucky and weird hours too.

I totally agree that for the most part that the above statement sums up what the problem is. We as a society are becoming less able to feed ourselves. I worry that we are losing a collective knowledge about how we feed ourselves, because so many have become disconnected about where their food comes from.

Do this, crack the eggs (one at a time) into a cup and then put it into the batter, or whatever you are making. Not often, but a couple of times I've come across an egg that was bad. Saves whatever you are cooking, especially when I was getting eggs from one neighbor. Never know how long an egg has been sitting when the chickens are free range!

I think the weirdness is called self sufficiency! Most of us are not used to producing our own food, or being so close to the source of it.
