Hi There,
I am having a very strange issue with my 3 week old chick. The feathers are really odd. The silky breeders say it is not typical of silky chick feathering. The Frizzle folks say it is not typical appearance for a chick with frizzle. So not sure what is going on. I had read somewhere about a parasite that lives in the feather shaft and eats it from the inside. The feathers get very thin near the ends and become fragile and broken. I cannot find anything about it and don't remember what it was called. Other birds can only get it when the feather is broken or during a molt. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?
The chick is a mix. I've purchased chicks from this person before. Never saw this, nor did he. No known silky or frizzle in his birds. Though he does have some Easter Eggers and I suppose that can mean just about anything.
So, This chick is still a baby and in the brooder. However I have 3 new chicks hatching now that I was planning to add to the brooder. And, in a few weeks, weather dependent, I would be moving the chicks to the baby coop next to my regular coop so they can all get acquainted.
I don't want to contaminate my flock, though. Does anyone have thoughts or suggestions?
