My one year old Araucana hen has some feathers missing from the base of her tail for several weeks now. I recently noticed both my one year old RI Red hens have feathers missing from the base of their wings - not as big a bare spot as the Araucana, but noticeable. I cannot see any parasites on them. They eat organic layer pellets with supplemental oyster shell calcium, and they free range during the day. There are 6 of them (5 hens and a rooster) living in a good sized coop. I have not noticed anyone pecking at the others. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The rooster is most likely the cause. Some get a bit rough during mating. You could try seperating them from the rooster to awhile, or you cuold put chicken saddles on them. Basically a piece of cloth so the rooster doesn't hurt them.

Make sure no bleeding, or the others will start pecking.

What size pen do you have them in? Sometimes the hens will pull feathers, but usually you're ok as long as they have plenty of room, and they are all getting enough protein.

Thanks NTM - where can I find chicken saddles? The coop is approx. 4'x6', with 4 nesting boxes and two perches. Take care of those nerves!!
