I have 8 hens,(2 yrs old this spring) RIR's and PBR's.And most of them have bald red butts and feather loss on the base of their tails.I'm assuming this is happening at night because they are out of their pen during the day and I am not seeing them peck each other.I even added another roost in their coop, since I thought mabey they were feeling crowded. They are fed a great diet with lots of treats, and get out to free range every day. They are still laying and I keep their coop and pen very clean.I have done everything possible to keep them happy and they look horrible! Any suggestions???This is SO frusterating!

I'm assuming you've checked for mites and lice around their bums. There are a few spray products available that help heal and also cover the color of the redness.

I have checked for mites and could not see any, I made an appointment to bring the one in the picture to the vet Monday,She is the worst. They will pluck a feather and examine it for mites and I'm bringing in a stool sample for parasite evaluation. This may all be behavioral but I will keep you posted...

I'm having a similar problem but not as bad. Mostly on the back toward the tail feathers on 4 out of 9 hens. Yes there is a rooster...Is he the culprit??
