We started our journey last year for a homeschool project and like many of you, have become addicted! On 2 Feb. we put 25 eggs in our little homemade telebator and if all goes well we will have some little peeps around the 22nd just in time for MDO (mother's day out) Rodeo Day. My kids are super excited because these little peeps will be from our own flock, some of which we hatched ourselves last year. They will all be crosses, except for a few white leghorns. We ordered eggs from Texas A&M last year for our project and hatched 11. We have two girls and a roo from this group left. The roo, George, is the proud pappa of these little guys and gals in the telebator. We are excited to see the hatchlings since we have some RIR, EE, BR, and BO eggs in the bator as well. Oh, and I forgot to mention, we also have 6 duck eggs in the mix from our mallards that we hatched last year. We rescued those two eggs that were abandoned around a pond where we were fishing. As it turned out, one was male and the other a female. Waddles and Taddles live happily with their fine feathered chicken friends.

We are 11 days into this and we have 25 active embryos. I know a lot can happen over the next couple of weeks but for now all is well. There is just something personal about a homemade bator and actually manually turning the eggs daily. And yes against many folk's advise we do candle quite often so the kids can see the progress and our temps and humidity are not alway right on the money, but neither is natures. We keep it as close as we can. Thanks to BackYardChickens and all of you, we have learned a lot over the past year. More than I ever thought I would know about chickens. The kids even make their own homemade flock blocks. Yes we do spoil or chicks!

Check out of photos and story on MY PAGE from our very first hatch last year and we will be posting some new photos in the next couple of days. Wish us luck!
