No movement at all

when would you take her out? I have another one pipped & starting to zip!
no movement through the night:( should I go ahead & take her out? I have another one pipped & starting to zip! I don't want that one to be messing with the quitter:(

Leave her in there. If you open the incubator again, you risk the same fate for your other chick that is zipping (and the other eggs).

I might end up getting a friend for Mini. I feel so bad that he is so lonely. There's another BYC member that raises silkies (howfunkyisurchicken aka: Nikki), and she's been helping me help Mini. Huge thanks to her! He doesn't look like he's knocking on death's door anymore (I didn't expect him to make it through the day yesterday, as he even started having trouble balancing and walking, and quite labored breathing like MoMo had). He doesn't look super great yet, still weak... but he is a runt, but the fact that he doesn't look any worse and is more active makes me hopeful again. Plus I haven't noticed any head flicking this morning, and he's been walking solidly.

What she had me do was take away the medicated chick starter, replace it with the non medicated. She thought that maybe since the banties are so much smaller he might have been having trouble with too much of the med, and it was blocking too much of his essential vitamins causing a deficiency (and likely the seizures in MoMo). I also gave him a boost of vitamin B1 yesterday (had to order the Poly Vi Sol and should have it today). I really think this has helped him.

Anything can happen yet, but if he continues to hang on for another day or two, and I feel better that he wont get another chick sick (if it was just a vitamin deficiency for the silkie chicks), I will probably get him a friend. Even though I hopefully have more hatching next weekend, I don't want him to have to wait that long. He's so lonely. If I can find some... Here in MI it's cold yet, and our local farm store isn't getting them in for at least another week or two yet.

Here's a picture I took of him this morning snuggling his teddy bear. He likes to sleep there, lay there, peck at teddy's fur, lol.

Aww, now that's just cute!

Silkie, I don't mean to try and be a know it all, just want to help here. When I see that picture you have posted..I'm not seeing a beak? If you had opened the bator and picked a piece off while it was zipping, it could have still been able to zip for a while, then it got a bit shrink wrapped. Can you still see movement? Either way, I would take that baby out, and start working on it, slowly, if it is still alive. Take your time. Wet a paper towel, or cloth and keep it moist so you can see where you are chipping away. A little blood is ok, but do stop for a while. Then go back an hr. later, and work with it more. A little at a time. My guess is, the blood vessels have pretty much absorbed if it is the one that you were talking about yesterday. That little beak needs to be cleared. Good luck. I hope I haven't offended you by saying..it's time. :)
And oh...take it out fast, I just reread your last post..you have another one zipping? Don't put the one back in that you are helping. I have many a time put one in under a light that I am helping. Keeps it warm, with a cloth or towel on it too, doesn't really matter if it goes back in the bator, it isn't going to hatch on it's own anyway once you've started helping.

Thank you for your help!! No offense at all!! this is m first time & no matter how much I have geeked out and read about this process, I keep getting surprises. I welcome all help completely :) I haven't seen any movement at all. So, you think it's safe to pluck that one out really quick so as to not disturb my other pipper? Just start chipping away at the shell until I know for sure if she's alive? I don't want to do anything until I get a few responses. I just had Maah tell me to leave her there

I don't know what to do.

How long should I leave her in there? Can the expired chick cause any problems for the others?

I'm not sure. I've never done staggered hatches at lockdown before. The general rule is that you should be ok to leave hatched chicks in there until all the chicks hatch. They can survive off their absorbed yolk sack without food or water for up to 3 days. With you having staggered hatches set in there & your eggs not all due at the same time... I'm not sure how to work that & I don't want to give bad information. Hopefully somebody more experienced can help clue us both in. I'm a sponge for information & I'd like to know too! I know they're out there... !

My general opinion though is that if you opened the incubator to remove the expired chick (maybe we'll get lucky & she's just taking a very long nap!?) it might do more harm than good. You being a nurse, I'm sure you can understand that... the benifits outweigh the risks. Until we get someone with more experience here, my suggestion is to just leave it be.

Oh, that works for me too. I was just worried about the other chick that is already zipping.

Yes, I saw that she has one zipping. I think she has that humidity up quite a bit though, and if it's zipped almost all the way, it should be fine.

Ok, changing my mind here, since I saw the other egg..it isn't zipping yet, it is just pipped, and I didn't know that you had a staggered hatch. That egg does need to come out if it's gone. Hike humidity, snatch it out. I've done it many a time with getting babies out after they have hatched and been in a while when I have others pipped. The others did fine. Once you get that one out, just sit back and relax..you will have a baby soon. That's a pretty nice pip, so you know it is breathing.

I did the same after my Peeps was the only chick I hatched successfully. DH bought 4 chicks for me & her LOL. She was so much happier once we put them in w/ her & so was I! They just don't do well alone. I've made myself sick over failed hatches, upset stomach- face broke out etc  I hate to waste anything, seeing all those wasted eggs & fully developed chicks (that never hatched or died right after) just made me ill! Every time I show DH someones new healthy chicks from here, he would say can't you just buy a few of the ones you want most? I still want to keep hatching, but when I have the chance to buy some @ good prices I will. I keep holding out hope for the ones I still have in the bator...:fl

I already got 2 just alike, the one on the way is a little different. I got ones that we can easily add on to.We've had such terrible weather the past few weeks we've had to wait to do the additions. I have my 2 buff orp pullets in 1, SFH chicks in the other. I want to keep all my breeds separate. If it stops raining today I take a pics of the 2 I have.
When I ordered the lav orp chicks DH said I could put them in w/ the buff? NOPE, need another pen. Then last night when I told him I got the choco orps, he said ok they can go in with the buffs or lavs? NOPE need another pen! A few hours later it dawned on him to finally ask me just how many breeds I planned on getting :lau
See I know that once the chicks are here, he'll make sure they have what they need to be happy & healthy- IF he knew the master plan 1st, he would have balked...
You crack me up because I do the same thing to my hubby! Glad I am not the only one out there!
