My VERY first incubation experience started Feb 23!! I'm so excited..today is day 4 altho my calendar/journal says day 3 because i started counting day 1 the second i put them into the bator...i hit real high heat day 1 but my humidity hangs bout 40-50 and my temp hangs bout 98-99...i'm scared of hitting high heat again :( i have not candled at all yet, trying to patiently wait till day 7...i've read alot about waiting till day 7 so i'm pushing myself to wait to see who's growing and who's not :) the babys are expected march 16...once my homemade styrofoam cooler bator is empty i'm planning to put a dozen in-BIG SMILE :) i currently own austrolorps: 2 roosters and 5 hens. i had RIR but some raccoons got VERY hungry and distructive :,( SO wish me luck as i sit by my little bator and await austrolorp babys!!!

Hi & welcome! Just a piece of advise....try to have your temp 99.5-100 and humidity no MORE than 40 the first 18 days. A little lower would be better. If your temp is less than 99.5 chicks develop slowly, can cause prob during hatch too. Good luck !

Thanks for the encouragement. Still no action for the remaining four. Another concern is the lone chick is caked with egg matter which seems to be hampering its movement. Otherwise the chick seems healthy. Would it be safe to wash off some of this stuff under warm running water then dry it carefully? Would a little soap be OK. I have the bathroom heating up to 90F so I can keep the temp constant. Many thanks for your help
If it's that bad then maybe just take a very warm wet washcloth, wipe it gently, then dry with another

17 has been stuck for over an hour. I badly want to help.
could be resting- has it broken through the membrane just under the shell yet? if so, let it be for a while- it takes time for them to get used to breathing- you don't want to rush it. as long as it can get air it's ok for a while. If it has not broken that membrane, then you could peel it back just enough for it to get air- but be careful if you do this- IF you see blood, stop & put it back

She has been like this for an hour. She keeps grasping at nothing trying to get free

Aww, that poor kid. Not sure what to tell you on her. I've never used a syrofoam bator setup. With my Brinsea, I'm sure I'd be able to quick help without it effecting the humidity... but not sure with yours. I think she'll be ok for a while yet in her kinked shell. You have so many more pipping & hatching now.
