FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Here's my miracle baby..Crispy. I think the name really stuck when gape encouraged her when she saw the first picture saying: Come on Crispy!

When she was fighting for her life, and she was crispy hard. There was no chipping
away at the shell to help her out, it just crumbled in my hand, and there was the stuff.
so I hurried and pulled her neck up out of it. Cleared most of it away, she had bled a
lot! No way I thought, but I put her in the incubator, with no egg shell around her, just
her and the yolk to be absorbed.

Here she is after she finally woke up

She's so cute..I don't know, maybe she needs a cutsie name.. :D

Pretty sweet baby

HOLY BUCKETS OF CUTE!!! She should be named Sugar!!!

Yes that is why this BYC thread is so great, we all support each other. I've learned so much from all of you & hope that maybe I've been able to help some of you too. I would have given up after the 1st hatch if not for this! Wow I'm getting all emotional

Seriously, are we ALL on the March thread? i NEED ya'll!!!

My Cochin eggs from eBay came today. I will be putting them in with the other 8 tonight

You are doing a stacked hatch? do you have a second incubator for lockdown??? I would hold off at LEAST 12-24 hours on setting depending on how far they came!!!

You want to let those cochin eggs rest for 24 hours pointy end down before putting them in the bator. They need time to "rest" before incubating.

Hi all!! Just wanted to update !!! My 2 special needs babies have both recovered, the extra stuff hanging on has now fallen off :)

Please look at this short video & tell me what you all think I have :) I was told that the mama was Ameraucauna/ Brahma mix, fertilized by Ameraucana roo. My first hatch I got 50%!! Not bad for a homemade bator!! So here are my babies <3 Bebe is the biggest & it's only 15 days old, but HUGE!!... they all hatched between 2/13-2/19. Anybody know what they are (besides chickens) & if anyone has an idea on who may be a boy/girl?
Thanks guys!!! I have better individual pics, but they don't like to be still :)

I'm going on lockdown tonight!!! I have 2 green eggs, 2 blue & 1 brown from my g-ma's flock!! She says they are Aracaunas. So do I have to post in the March hatch along thread now? lol

It's gorgeous!!! I want a crispy lol
What kinda chick is it ....... Awe!!!
you are so sweet! i like you!!

HOLY BUCKETS OF CUTE!!! She should be named Sugar!!!
agree!!

I'm guessing I don't need to "imprint" them? Just "get them used to me"? How would I imprint? Everytime I pull one out it panics from no heat. I am currently just taking 1 out (sometimes 2). Setting them on the floor, and holding out food (which few take) and talking to them. Will that work fine? I want loving birds!

I was interested in creating a new thread, but couldnt figure out how for some reason. So i'll try posting here in hopes of getting some good advice :). I bought a still air incubator and after 21 days, i am finally seeing some activity. However , am a little concerned about the first chick. Since early this morning, the beak is outside the shell, but it hasnt made any more progress. Is it possible to be stuck in this position and not be able to zip after pipping? The membrane started off white, now it looks like there is some fluid inside or something, it looks wet. I am wondering what is going on, and if the poor little chick isnt going to make it. Its peeping and seems very alive. Just not sure if this is normal. My first time hatching. My temp has been perfect at 99.5, i have turned them 3 and 4 times a day since day one, and i filled the trays in the bottom with water, however i didnt have a humidity tester. According to the instructions, keeping the trays full was good enough....ANyone have any ideas on if this is normal or not? Will include a couple pics. Thanks :)

once it pipped (what you see there) it can be 12-24 hours before hatch sometimes!!

ETA i would get a hydrometer/thermometer ASAP though for future hatches!

It looks like it pipped on the wrong end, so it might need some assistance at some point. Wait 24 hours to see if it can do it by itself as it still needs to absorb the blood and yolk from the shell, and if it hasn't progressed by then I would assist. Follow this guide on when and how to assist with hatching: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

it looks like it didnt form completely and the others picked at it too, and now its just bleeding. blood welling up in the shell....ugh...aren't i just a ray of freaking sunshine with this last few days. I pray to GOD my next hatch is better. And as for washing the chicks....that stuff is not coming off....its like I want to take a tiny comb and brush the hardened "gel" off them. They seemed SO wet when born....this is just crazy. I feel like all of this is my fault and just miserable today. I am sorry for being the Debbie Downer in here :(

I actually use a little paint brush (real bristles. Not plastic.) and dip it in warm water and "paint" the goop off. The bristles from the brush seem to help get it off the feathers.

that lil cutie was a blessing from above for shure

Seriously, I am crying again reading all your wonderful responses. I know for 100% the main issue was the VERY rotten egg....I dont even know where to dispose of this thing. I left it out on my counter while I ran to a consignment sale to try and save a few bucks on kids summer stuff....got home and my whole bathroom smells like death....*barf* I am going to have something to drink tonight....seriously...and get a few good nights sleep before we do this again next week. I dont even want to get excited this time. I am so scared to death. I am most sad about my tiny little Sizzles. They were my feistiest little chickies in their eggs....ugh....I canNOT stop crying. I am so dang sad!!!

I got two sets of eggs today, one from Aprilschicks and they are 100% IN TACT! so that is amazing, and my sweet crzychicknlady (amanda) sent me this HUGE box backed with beautiful big eggs....they did everything right, and my mail carrier called me this morning while I was out to tell me how sorry she was for her fill in when my last batch got ruined, and how she will hold these for me safe til I get them....I was shocked at the SIZE of the box Amanda sent, I cut into it right in the parkinglot....opened the flap....and started to cry and said the F word a LOT louder than the seniors in the parkinglot look like they have heard in a while.....*sigh* and did what? CRY...all the way home....yes...like the freaking pig.

Then I come home and the last chick is bleeding out in her shell....my others look like a little greaser gang....ugh...

BUT.....I need to get my incubator cleaned (can I use bleach???) and ready, bc Saturday I am putting these eggs and the others I expect this week into it....and next week....It's lock down again...but I promise I will be a LOT quieter this time....*sigh*

Thank you all!! I needed ya'll through this...NO ONE would understand my sadness like ya'll!!!

Put the rotten egg in a plastic bag and wrap the plastic a few times around it. If you think it smells now you should see when they explode. You can either toss it in your garbage outside ot do like I do and bury them in the back yard.

You have to remember too that you haven't gotten a lot of sleep in the last few days. You are exhausted and have had high's and low's and now your body just needs to recover. I remember my first hatch. I literally didn't sleep for 3 days straight. My first chick hatched on day 16 and I had chicks hatching for the following 3 days. On the 3rd night I finally went to bed with 2 eggs still zipping. My daughter said that she came into the room at around 2am to tell me they had hatched. I had a full conversation with her and to this day I do not remember any of it. The first hatch you do is the biggest learning experience. Now you know what NOT to do. You will see over the next few days you are going to be running different options through your mind and deciding what you are going to do on your next hatch. I started hatching last July (not even a year) and have not stopped since. Yes, I have been hatching chicks for 6 straight months. That's why I have over 100 chickens...lol. Time does heal the pain and with every new chick you hatch from hear on out you will always be amazed at the life that you brought into the world.

This is how some great friendships are formed too. Roxanne and I meet in my very first hatch a long last year and we both just kept going. We talk on the phone every now and then and really give each other a lot of support. Every hatch I do I end up making a few good friends that I enjoy keeping up with.
