PugBug... I'm feeling like I need some updated pics... might help the ulcer I've got going here over your hatch. LOL. ?? hmmm? Ya, I'm pathetic, I know. And I know it might be a bit of selfishness. I somehow have it in my brain that you are going to have super healthy babies this time, and that somehow that is going to reassure me that my next hatch will have healthy babies too. It's assenine, I know, but still...

awww! I of course LOVE taking pics of my fuzzy butts- soon as DH wakes up so I can get the camera out of the bedroom I'll do it. I've kept him up half the night piddling around in my nervousness. Shouldn't be long. And you WILL have healthy ones, I'm sending ya too many good hatch vibes not to

I'm setting my eggs tomorrow or Sunday, and this will be my very first hatch!

The first incubator I used (still use) is one I built myself out of things around the house. I think I spent a total of $20 for all the little things I didn't have. Iused an old igloo cooler that had been sitting in my garage for years bought some electrical stuff at lowes and watched some videos on You tube and I was set to go. I am a 49 year old, woman who had no prior experience in building anything ,let alone electrical knowledge, and if I could do it anyone can. I was so afraid I was going to burn my house down and after almost 8 months of continuous use,both the bators I built are still going strong (I use them for hatchers alone now). They both keep temp. and humidity perfectly and all I really have to do is add water.
You have to realize that everyone has different environments that they hatch in. Someone who lives up in the mountains will do things totally different from someone who lives near the ocean. Even people in the same geographical location have different conditions. I know a lady who lives a few streets from me and she incubates at different humidity levels than I do. The different seasons make a difference too.

Thanks Brookhavens! I really am just first time nervous I am sure. I didnt realize how stressful all those little eggs would be!! (and I have another 50 something being set up next week!!!) I may take up hard drinking before it's all over! LOL!! I am not electrically inclined at ALL!! I *would* burn my house down I am sure!! But I would love to see your home made incubators!

I got a chick!! Ok ok it was from under my broody hen but one is here!! :-D my broody and incubator are all on the same day, w the same shipped eggs. Day 19 (yeaterday) I saw one had pipped under her and this morning it's here and already fluffing.

Nothing going on in my bator yet though on day 20. Last night we had crazy power surges and then lost power for about 4 hrs!! My bator temps dropped and my humidity spiked way high...I'm totally scared it just ruined my bator hatch, but just going to wait and see what happens

I am soooo happy you have a chick- who cares how it got here!!! Just once again proves we can't hold a candle to nature- as for the humidity spike, that's better than being down, esp since you are in lockdown!

And as for all the rest of you getting so upset & nervous- We are ALL gonna end up with ulcers if you don't calm down LOL

I nearly forgot, I wanted to ask you what kind of chick is your avatar? It looks a lot like the porcelain chicks DH got me the other day, I was wondering if that's what your pic is?

gapeach: Oh, I feel so terrible for you. It must be stressful to have those kinds of temp fluctuations. If you're crafty, you may want to consider adding a fan to your still air for your next hatch. I have a friend on another list who took a fan off of an old computer, then used an old charger from an old radio or soemething to power it. Says it has really improved his hatches because of the stabilized temp. If you are interested, I can try to find his description of what he did exactly, altho I'm not sure he gave much more info than I just did, lol.

to reiterate....lol....I *will* burn this house to the ground if I start tinkering with electric stuff....I would have better luck blowing into the holes 975 times a day!!

If you ever loose power you can always wrap the bator in blankets or towels to try and keep the heat in for as long as possible. All my bators are plugged into a surge protector because we get a lot of power surges even when the weather is nice outside.
