First chick from a broody hen hatched! No pictures of it, but i’ll get some tomorrow and hopefully by then she’s hatched more.
If everybody is ok with general chick pictures, ie chicks hatched in january, I did something! I have some young chicks who hatched jan. 28 & 29 who I plan to be apart of my BC breeding group. Given they’re still young, I’ve been hoping that the broody chicks would hatch soon enough so that I could stick my incubator-hatched ones with them.
So I gave that a shot today. Definitely didn’t do anything that is typically recommended when introducing hens to chicks, just put them in the same pen as her, but she accepted them anyways! I had to take my other broody out because she was screaming at them, but that’s one minor issue.
They were on-and-off tucking underneath her then running around all day, but settled in for snuggles once it started getting dark. She seemed a bit confused as to why they were running around all day, but didn’t abandon her unhatched eggs for them.
I feel happy, and like I just made my life a lot easier. I know broody hens don’t have a 100% success rate in raising chicks, but when time comes to *hopefully* integrate them into the flock, it should be easier because they’ve got mama to protect them.
Heres broody “Confetti Cake” with her adopted clutch, still sitting on her unhatched eggs.
