February 2023 hatch-a-long

Pics
So it's been a minute or two since I have been out here to the backyard....

Just finished up another successful hatch of my own chicky-poos. They were blue eggs from Ameracaunas, but the jury is still out on who the baby daddy is. :) I have several roos.

I had a couple unhatched eggs (day 21 was Mon and I have 4 fluffy babies out of 6 eggs). I was going to clean out the incubator because being the CRAZY chicken lady that I am, hatching my own eggs is not enough noooo... but much to my surprise, one of the remaining eggs was peeping at me, so excited to see that baby hatch.

So I have about 38 more hatching eggs coming that I ordered on eBay (yea I know...been there done that with the abyssmal hatch rate)

Here's what I am hatching next:

  • Dominiques - new breed for me, any interesting info on this breed??
  • Golden Comets/ISA browns - love these rockstar egg layers
  • Polish - My pet Muppet needs some of her own kind of people....
  • Silkies (some evil, EVIL critter ate all my silkies...RIP Mr Nugget, Cotton, and QTip)
  • Ayam Cemanis (I have a Roo already)
  • Wheaten Ameracaunas
  • Wheaten Marans

Excited to add to my flock!!
So i didn't win the bid on the Wheaten eggs...some jerkball outbid me literally in the last 2 minutes of the auction. I call FOWL!!! I got 🐓 blocked!!!! (lol)

Sooooooo, y'all know how I just had five silkie babies hatch last weekend, six expected in the next few days, and I have upwards of 30 more eggs in my incubators? Well, I called around to the Rural King's in my area, and they finally had some blue/green egg layers in (Prairie Bluebell Eggers - I purchase my egg-layers sexed rather than dealing with excess roosters). So I rushed down to get them before they were gone...

I was only going to get eight, I swear! But the guy offered me them for $3/chick instead of $5.49 if I took the remaining five as well, and who can pass up that kind of deal? Then I saw the Welsummer's, and they had some Mystic Onyx too and they look fun!

I brought home 21 chicks... 🤣

Grocery store egg or your eggs from the fridge?
Eggs from a friend’s flock. He doesn’t hatch anything himself (yet) First, they were in HIS fridge. He doesn’t store them “properly” for hatching, only for eating - fat side down, no turning, and the ages of the eggs were unknown because he just brings me whichever eggs are probably oldest (just for eating because my girls weren’t laying yet). Then they sat in MY fridge for at least a week before I set them

sorry. That stinks! I didn't know if I should be sad or laugh......
I am sad - but I ended up finding another listing of 15+ blue copper marans that look super cool. I like oddball and unusual color combos and breeds, so these will make me happy if I win this bid...(fingers crossed I don't get snookered in the last 30 seconds of the auction...).

I was complaining in a group chat in TEAMS at work, and they all think I am this totally insane chicken obsessed lady...sadly, they are correct :lau

Good luck!!!!!! I love different colors that are not the "norm" The breeder I use has some unusual colors for Brahma's and Orpingtons. I am hoping to hatch some of them. not sure how "unusual" actually but she bred and "made them up. haahaa a caramel laced chocolate orpington is one of them.
