February Broody On 14 Eggs BRR!

Big news Mary's chicks are hatching, so far just one but I have high hopes for her clutch. It was in the 30s today and supposed to be warmer tomorrow so I did not bring the chick inside. I did get 10 chicks from a lady who gets my fertile eggs and then just gives me chicks in return. One is a turken, he/she is so ugly it's cute. My incubator has been holding temperature 99.5 to 100 and humidity is 50 percent. I have noticed with it warming up outside the humidity does go up in the incubator, I removed a cap 2 times today as it creeped up to 60. I candled again tonight and all of my eggs are doing great, I can see movement and may lock them down a day earlier than I'm supposed to.
I love to hear the peeping in the house with the new chicks, it beats the parrot saying 50 times a day "good morning Grandma)" lol.
Can't wait to check on Mary's progress tomorrow.
On a different note, I always went by the book for temperature in my brooder, with these 10 chicks because I still had the pot bellied pig in the house didn't have as much extra space as normal so I just brought in a rabbit cage, 60 watt light bulb, and draped 3 towels around parts of the cage. The House temperature is set at 68. I know there is no way these chicks are 85 degrees (they are a week old) but they are doing great, running around, eating, and drinking. I guess it goes to show that healthy chicks are durable.
Very good news! I remember when I first got Turkens. You almost have to love them. I put some new eggs in the bator, including two banty eggs. I'm pretty excited to see what comes out of these (first time hatching from my banty flock). I candled tonight and most of them look like they're taking off. An update on my hatchery chicks: not good. Out of 25, we've lost 12. All Dorkings gone, one or two from from each breed that I bought, and all but one of my White Orps. What's quite frustrating is that they all seemed healthy, and here it is five days after they arrived, and they keep dropping like flies. I expect to lose some, but not this late in the game. (This happened last year too.) Needless to say, I'll be ordering from a different hatchery next time. At least momma and her babies are doing good. Looking forward to the warmer weather! Keep me updated and post some pics when Mary's family is complete!

I love my turkens. I never thought I wanted any but now I can't wait until mine is old enough to produce some offspring, plus I want to add showgirls as well. The NN in my avatar pic is my roo. He's a big boy now at 4 months.

He's cute! I have three little pullets, not yet laying. They're quite the trio!

Aww, so sorry about your losses. Did you already have some Dorkings or where they a new breed for you? I have read that they are a hearty breed. Will the hatchery replace the chicks after 5 days? My husband deals with my chicken obsession and adds to it for me, builds coops, buys feed so my gift to him is Turkens. He loves the breed and their look, me on the other hand have grown to love them. We only have the rooster, we lost the hen last summer for no apparent reason. Well off to check on Mary! I hope some progress has been made...

I have a pullet too, she's no where near as nice looking as my roo...lol Kinda homely. But she's got a decent personality. She's actually mixed with Aracuana and has these couple little tuft feathers sticking out on her cheeks. They are only 4 months, so not laying yet either, (though my roo is very......lusturous??? lol He's looking to fertilize already! I am curious to see what color eggs she ends up laying. I have a feeling she will be the first one to start laying.

I have Excellent news!! So far 2 chicks from Mary and one is a TURKEN! Now the pictures are not that good as I wanted to be quick. I seen a few more hatching. The other chick is an EE mix.

I will get better pictures when more chicks hatch..

Looking good! One of my little Turkens is black. The other two are red. So precious! Oh and McMurray will only refund losses within 48 hours, then of course you'll have to buy more to meet the minimum of 25 (or 15 after April 1st). Thier baby Dorkings seemed very small and weak. I'll order more from somewhere else and hopefully have better luck. For now, I think I'll go and snap a picture of my three Turken ladies for a new avatar!

The turken is a polish!! Polish are my only white egg layers so I know for a fact I got my Polturk lol. So far 3 have hatched, I hope there will be more by tomorrow. I locked down my 32 eggs in the incubator tonight, the chicks appeared to be large and I was told 16 - 18 days for a still air incubator is good so I'm at day 17. Waiting for the humidity to get up to 65%, seems like it's taking a lifetime. Can you tell me if it is alright to leave my thermometer on top of the eggs during lock down or should I put it on the bottom (grate)? We had beautiful weather today 45 and tomorrow it's supposed to be 47. :) now for the big thaw and mud. Maybe my Muscovys will start laying. Since it has warmed up we finally put our potbellied piglet outside, Mr. Pig AKA Pork chop, Porky, or MP Hammer lol. He was the runt so we syringe Fed him, litter box trained him, socialized him with our 1 1/2 year old grandson, but pig poo smells horrible so I'm glad he's out in the barn being a pig. He gets the run of our yard when we are outside but goes back in his stall/pen at night. We still have his mom but rehomed the boar and the rest of the babies, I didn't want to contribute to the potbellied pig problem, they don't stay small forever! His mother wants nothing to do with him but maybe come summer pasture time they will see eye to eye. We did get him fixed. I'd love to see pictures of your hens LRH, SORRY I don't know your name.
