Very cute & a great idea. Our 1st coop we built last spring is insulated well & has electricity, we have turned that into our brooder & juvenile coop. It works great, I have 6 wk olds, 4 wk olds & 2 day old chicks out there. The ambient temp of the room is 50-60 and then the babies chicks have their heat plate for warming up under. I have found they feather out much faster & get acclimated to the outside temps faster this way. In addition I don't have all the chicks in my basement reeking having to my health.

Just a caution for those who want to work with the shipping pallets...You want to find the ones with HT on them...which mean the pallet was heat treated...as opposed to doused in pesticide. They do that to keep the pallet strong and away from rodents and bugs.

I use pallets for gardening at my home so we researched them quite a bit.

Thanks, I've never heard that before. There is a company near my house that sells aluminum siding, and it comes in these long boxes that are framed with 2ftx4ft rectangles of 2x4s with 12 ft long 1/2"x3" and 1/2"x6" slats to brace the bottom. They pile them out by the dumpster, and it's first come, first serve. It has definitely saved me a fortune on coops over the last couple of years. It just takes a little elbow grease to strip them down. I've built some redneck chic lawn furniture, too.
I'm hoping these juveniles sell before they get big enough to lay eggs. This coop should be the final destination in the incubator, brooder, halfway house rotation

Nice grab on 2x4 pallets of that length! I was looking at some shed plans with them...so many cool ideas out there!
 
This is one of my feb 1 chicks...any idea what breed this could be? (Disregard his purpletoe...I painted it to make sure I know where he came from).
