Yes. Just mark very little. Sharpies aren't as safe to use as pencils, but still work. I use the very fine tipped ones and only mark in tiny numbers.
Thanks for the info - so a dry hatch is just using the ambiant humidity as best you can & let the eggs maintain it until day 18.
I'm still new to hatching - I'm not ready to try that yet. At least not with purchased eggs - maybe when I'm back to getting some free ones that are fertile.
I have a silkie rooster still - but black silkie banty crossed with a buff orpington may not look right.
I just set 4 mutt eggs. I was waiting for my showgirl eggs that were supposed to be here today but thanks to the wonderful Post Office, they can't find my eggs
. So I have a friend that is a toal enabler. She gave me two EE eggs and two brown eggs from her other chickens (austrolorp or cinnamon gueen or ?) but they were fertilized by a GORGEOUS Silver Laced Polish that I gave her last year. I am do to go into lockdown on Feb.1. I have never hatched mutt eggs so I am curious to see what they will look like especially since their daddy is a polish lol
My blue Orpington girl just went brooch so I took three eggs out of the bator (one marran and two ameraucana) and gave them to her...I am so excited to see what happens! Will she have a better hatch rate than me?
It's on like Donkey Kong!
Going to set roughly 2 dozen BLRW crosses in the incubator in 2-3 days! Question: does anyone know how to make the humidity stay lower during the first couple weeks in a Little Giant Incubator?? Do I just add water to 1 channel??
When I had a Little Giant, I didn't follow by the channels thing. . . I just added more or less water. If there was too high of humidity, I sucked the water out with a syringe.
Anyone far enough along to know their fertility?
I candled my Shamo eggs today - 10/11 are fertile.
My Shamo x Marans got a lower fertility rare, but I'm pretty sure it is because a lot of the eggs I collected were from hens who were not bred. I got more than I should have just in case I got the wrong eggs. Had 5/12 fertile, but thankfully all the eggs from my darkest laying hen were fertile. (not that egg color matters in this scenario)
I am happy to report that I managed to get my temp to a stead 100*. Not sure why it spiked like that, this is a first with this bator (Brinsea Octo Eco 20).

So, I didn't candle the BCM eggs and had all five hatch under broody ( four survivors) and these Splash Marans eggs I posted... the first five are just as dark! I think I need lighter eggs to try candling the first time I do it. Sigh. Just leave it to Nature this time, again. I guess...
Anyone giving candling lessons? And yes, I have looked at the link and watch the video, but I am a hands-on learner... See one, do one, teach one!
