FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long, come join in!!

My 1st hatch is just finishing up. Welsummer and welsummer cross. I had forgotten how active and noisey they can be ! But so cute. Was not sure how the hatch would turn out as we have had some realy cold days in oklahoma this past 3 weeks, but at about 68% for a still air incubator is not too bad.

Well I must of been really delirious when I was sick and set the second half of my staggard hatch eggs. I assumed that I set them a week apart. I was wondering why last week none hatched LOL. That has never happened to me before. I decided to leave the eggs in there another week because I know I forgot to write the date down I was feeling so bad when I was setting them and all. This morning I woke up to 11 valentine's babies!! There are more eggs pipped tonight. I'm so happy

Set chicken eggs

FEB. 11,12,20,21,22

MARCH 20,21

I looked up the moon phases due to the 20 and 21 are on both months, both dates fall on the day 18 and day 19 of the waning moon. if that means anything. It sounds like good folklore and a challenge to try to set on those dates.

Heheh I actually picked the day I am setting our next hatch based on the Farmer's Almanac. I'm funny that way.

My first chick EVER just climbed out of his egg! He only pipped a few hours ago! I have 1 that pipped last night that's very slow, and 3 others pipped this evening. I'd love to know what kind of chickens they are...parents are mutts I think! I have 2 frizzles (1 roo and 1 hen) both bantam, a bantam silkie hen, and 2 standard mutts - they ewre supposed to be the silkies babies, but I think she adopted

Sooo...they might be frizzles, sizzles, frazzles, or mutts! I will try to attach a pix of chickie #1!

We are gonna lose the one chick I had to help out of his shrink wrapped membrane. Looks like we're only gonna get the 2 sebrights out of this hatch.

Not gonna take the remaining eggs out of the bator until Wednesday evening, which will be 24 full days. Of the remaining 6 eggs, we got one tiiiiiiiny pip earlier this morning about 10:00 and nothing since.

Like I've said, though, this was our first hatch and was a learning curve.

I think all I'm getting is 2 OEs from 4 that made it to lock down..looks like a boy and a girl I had turkeys hatch Saturday so they'll all go together. The next batch should hatch starting the 23rd and another on the 25th...THe turkeys are beginning to lay better I've been setting 6 or 7 seem to hatch 4...the last ones I had 17 so I'm hoping for a better hatch but they are all first time layers seems like turkeys are kinda slow to figure things out.....pretty funny to watch
