Fecal confirmed gapeworm resistance to fenbendazole

One or two studies say it's not effective unless large doses are given. :idunno

Thanks so much all of you. I’m not a fan of ivermectin bc I’ve used it in the past without results. I had totally eradicated through use of DE in the ground of their large fenced in yard (or so I thought) until two weeks of rain came. I was seeing a lot of earthworm parasite artifact (harmless to chickens) in their fecals so I knew they had been eating a lot more of them than normal. We have another week of rain coming and I think going forward with heavy or prolonged rain I’ll keep them penned. I’m also trying my hand at cayenne pepper in small amounts once every few days as a deterrent just as an experiment. Thanks sooo much for your help!!

Cayenne pepper as a deterrent for the chickens?
I am so upset. I think I did damage with the cayenne pepper. I have two chickens in one pen and one is moulting and has not laid an egg for quite some time. So I have just one hen in this house that lays eggs. I found one this morning under her where she slept and it was mostly normal but looked like sandpaper had roughed up some of it and some of the brown shell was a bit faded. But then she got on the nest and laid a wrinkled egg this afternoon. Shells on both eggs. I've never seen a malformed egg before out of this hen. I had read that cayenne pepper can disturb their laying and increase it. Is it likely I have caused her damage? She is about 3-4 years old, cochin standard. She is my absolute doll baby. Also for the record, as part of my experiment, cayenne pepper does NOT worm them as I have read, so it was all for nothing. I checked the fecal this morning and it was loaded with gapeworm eggs, after there being none on Friday night and Saturday morning. I treated with Valbazen this time.
So two questions - is the two eggs deal something to be freaked out about? I gave her all that cayenne on Thursday of last week and maybe a small dose (like maybe 1/32 tsp) on Saturday and earlier today. Second question is do I give the Valbazen for five days the same way as how I did the fenbendazole? I gave them both 0.5 cc.

thanks for any help.

You probably overheated the hen and sent her into molt, I doubt you did any permanent damage. Since we are on a full moon this is the perfect time for deworming plus changing to the albendazole is a good move. I use 25 ml per gallon of water but as always, oral dosing is the absolute best.

Oh no sorry I was confusing. The hen that laid the two eggs is not in a moult. I was just saying the two eggs had to come from one hen bc the other isn’t laying right now.

have you ever tried rolling up the hair of a horses tail -3 or 4 strands of hair and putting a small loop on the end, twisting the rest of the hair together very tightly and then taking this and running down your chickens trachea when you suspect gapeworms and pulling out the worm? it works great !!!!! This way you remove the symptoms, the worm, relieve the gagging, yawning of your chicken and usually don't need the meds!!!!
