Fed Up with TSC Chicks

We bought 6 chicks from TSC last week. When I asked the guy who was working there if some of the chicks that were in the bin were Easter Egger's he looked at me like he didn't know what the heck I was talking about. I was pretty sure that they were. I said "You know, the ones that lay colored eggs." He said, "We don't sell chicks that lay colored eggs." After debating with him about it for a few minutes he finally says, "Oh yeah, they lay green eggs." Turns out he thought I meant that the egg yolks were colored. And then when I asked about some other chicks in the bin, he had to refer me to the handy dandy chart in the front of the store.

Folks that buy chicks from stores like this are no different than folks that buy puppies at the mall. In the end, they are only perpetuating the situation and not really helping. Sure, they are helping that lil chick, but the message being sent is that folks are buying chicks.

Like we say in the dog world, you ought to buy from a reputable breeder.

at our TSC we (DW and I) are the chicken experts? Thats what they call us when we come in.We have responded to alot of customers inquiry as:

What kind of chicken is this?
Does the rooster lay eggs too?
why does my duck have diarhea? and can I feed it pepto bismol for the diarhea problem?
will this chick lay eggs in a week?
can I just toss this chick outside to feed without a shelter?
it doesnt need a heat lamp, you dont know what you're talking about!!

and many more irresponsible chit chat from mundane lifeforms.Suprised that noone in this TSC didnt point out, like I do to first time chicken raisers the book section. They need to read up on how to raise chickens before getting them.

Since the Tetra Tints are a TSC exclusive, I would think TSC would know something about them. That's not to mention that I had already pointed out in my original question that the local stores were unable to provide the information I was requesting.

There are plenty of other feed stores, local breeders, online sellers, and regional swaps to keep me swimming in chickens and whatever I need for them. I'm done with TSC.

WOW.. thats all TSC could say about a product they carry..ehhee.. why do I find that so funny... you know what I mean

but thank you so much for trying to help us all figure out exactly what tetra tints really are.. I for myself really appreciate your efforts..

When I was in ours, there was a lady with what I would call rabid children (hanging on displays, bumping gates into the chicken bins, etc) who was asking a lot of actually responsible questions about the chicks, but one of the sales ladies was giving her pretty mixed responses. I loved her one to the lady's question about why she had to buy six chicks.

"That way, they can get your name in the book so they know where the chicks are."

Ive heard about "the book" it sounds to me to be forced impletmentation of a voluntary system. I dont like it, if my tsc did that i would tellthem to keep the chicks and go right over to their bulletin board to find someone local to buy from. I dont see anything wrong with tsc selling the chicks, but the staff should Definitly have more training! I got my first chicks from there because the only local person i knew who sold chicks not only wanted $5 each for straight run, i didnt like how she kept her chickens. Lots with bumblefoot, loads of poop. She ran a "chicken mill" if you will.
Now i know better but i dont think i would have been able to get chickens if it hadnt been for tsc. When i go in there now i talk to the ppl looking at chicks and i make sure i have my card and tell them I raise chicks and ducks so i do know something about it.
I really get mad when they sell ppl the gallon hanging waterers for Chicks!

I agree 100% I read about chickens for a year before I got them. I think I know pretty much alot. But I am learning alot on this site and as I go.

They have an iPhone app as well!

That's great! I'm looking that up right now!

Just checked it out, that looks cool but I'm not sure I want to pay $1.99 for it. But I'm cheap about my apps, anyone buying a lot of chicks from stores might find it worth paying for.
