From a quick search: "CDC estimates Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths in the United States every year." - and that number is NOT for the most part from backyard chickens with "212 people in 44 states" sickened, which is not even a drop in the bucket compared to 1.2 million...it's barely 0.0177%. Yes, you want to wash your hands and enforce sanitary procedures if you choose to raise your own chickens.
