I change out the water (2 water dispensers)for my 4 hens every 4 days and add probiotics. I add de-worming to their food once a week. Can someone give me advice if I'm doing ok or if I should be doing something different? My hens are approx.18 weeks old.

Thanks
James

Where, in general are you? Adding your location to your profile helps us give you better targeted answers when climate or local availability matters. :)

You don't need to be constantly giving your chickens medicines, even natural medicines. Especially you should never give them anything in their water without giving them a second waterer of plain, pure water with nothing whatsoever added. :)

Imagine if you never had anything to drink but Gatorade.

Also, there is no need to routinely deworm chickens. IF -- and that's a big IF -- the problem ever arises you can treat it then. Routine deworming only creates resistant strains that can't be treated when the need arises. :(

All your chickens need for good health is high-quality feed of an appropriate formulation for their age and laying status and pure, fresh water. Because many of us here have mixed flocks of different ages or sexes, we usually recommend an 18-20% protein all-flock feed with free-choice oystershell on the side for the laying hens so that they can manage their own calcium.

If you're in the US where it's available, I'm currently using the one from Nutrena Country Feeds, which is about $5/bag less than the Purina. My flock loves it and their molt is going smoothly.

This was great info. Only wish I knew if I had all hens. I will follow your advice. They are eating well and love attention. I made a dirt bath area and will add earthworm's so they can dig, it unless I should not . Great site to be on. Thanks 3Killerbees. Will post up dates.
