Hope your hens are laying golden eggs to pay for that!!!!! ouch...I think I spend 60$ a months right now-I hope it doesn't get anymore than that-I havent' been selling my eggs latley-eating alot of them and I gave away alot on BYC for the "spirit" of passing it on...I'm taped now :) but filled with joy!

All I can say is:

HOLY S**T

wow weeee and I thought I spent alot! Mine go threw 1 75 pound bag of layer feed ($11.93) and 1 50 pound bag of scratch a month ($9.55) Thats all for 23 hens and 3 roosters.

geesh I wish i had the energy to figure what I spend on feed.
I have about 700 birds right now- I just go buy feed and lots of it.

If i am in my car, I can only get about 9 50pds bags in my trunk.

I go get that at least weekly.

If i go in the truck- i get as much as i can fit in it.

spent almost 29k in 2008. but that is for the horses/pigs/cow and chicks.

I am thinking about getting a silo and start mixing my own feed.

I feed about a five gallon bucket full of feed a day . I mix whole Grains = oats-wheat-corn-sunflower seeds-hi fat/pro dog food- and also this time of the year chick starter . Sometimes use/add Sunflower hearts , safflower seeds , millets .
I feed a lot of Chickens and Pigeons . I mix and make most all of the feed , I'm afraid to count them . The cost is about $120-$150 a month .

my cost does go down all summer and fall due to free ranging but..with all my babies-so far 40+ Im going through alot of chick starter and such...the older birds get fed alot of scraps too...there's been days where they don't eat their food and just free range and eat leftover-veggies-breads-crackers and such...

We spend about $100 a month for 50 chickens, 30 ducks, a few quail and turkeys too. The ducks seem to be the food hogs. I just butchered some ducks today and filled the freezer. Theyz good eatin!

I have 47 thirteen week olds and they have been using 50 lbs per week of 15% pellets. One bag is $13. I also give smallish amounts of scratch for treats and that's $9 per 50 lbs. So I spend about $70 a month on feed and I have large breed birds. I anticipate I'll have to increase feed as the birds grow.

We do give treats like fruit/veg scraps and if they are really good they get a loaf of 100% whole wheat bread, that is their favorite treat!

The chickens have a 50x50 yard with a lot of grass to snack on too.

Those hens put out 35 dozen or more eggs per day at $3 per dozen. The grand daughters sell them to the local cafes. After they pay for the feed, it leaves $30 for each of them. They are putting most of the money in their college account. They will all of that for both want to be vets. UC Davis aint cheap.
I keep telling them they are learning more out here in the real world working with the animals, than some of the class rooms they will be going to.
Both volunteer at a local cat shelter. And have been up to their shoulders at calfing time. Real world experence.
If Denny's would buy thier eggs they could double the flock.
