Feed; Flock Raiser?

I could be wrong but I believe that since the Flock Raiser is for all birds (turkey, ducks, geese, chickens, etc...) that it doesn't have any medications in it, because the ducks, for instance, cannot tolerate medications in their feed.

I mix the Flock Raiser half and half with a 16% Grower feed that I get at the feedstore (their own mix). It lowers the protein a bit to keep my birds (layers, ducks, dual purpose chickens and jumbo quail) from getting too fat. The grower is also 6 bucks a bag, half the price of the Flock Raiser, so it cuts my cost, too.

If I were using it just for meat birds, though, I would probably leave it 20% and not cut it with anything.

Heck, I wish I could find ANYTHING that was worth feeding for 6 bucks a bag. I can't find anything around here under about $13 for 50#. Getting chickens again is gonna cost me!!

My feedstore rocks

they have cracked corn for under 6 bucks, and whole corn for even less than the cracked. I have donkeys, too, so I need the cracked/whole corn - the cracked also make a nice cheap scratch for the chickens now and then.

The 6 buck a bag 16% stuff actually looks good, too - first time I opened a bag of it I thought "wow, I'd cook this stuff up for breakfast!"
My chickens went nuts the first time I fed it to them, too - their old stuff was very powdery, and this stuff was more granular and has a few whole kernels in it - they acted like they'd been lost on a desert island for a year and hadn't had a good meal in all that time.

I only mix in the Flock Raiser because I also feed the stuff to the ducks and quail - if it were just the chickens, I'd feed the straight 16% stuff. But, for ease of serving

I mix the two, and they all love it, so it works out well.

The only thing on the flock raiser I saw that said anything is a white tag attached to the bottom seal (rope) under active ingrediants Amprolium. But (forgive me if I am repeating myself I've been talking about this in a few diff threads today) I did speak to a feed store today that would special order the starter w/o meds, so I would assume the flock probably does have a counter part just no one around here carries it, but as I said NOTHING on that bag said medicated, just the white tag on the bottom w/ ingrediants and active ingrediants and it was the 50# (I'm pretty sure but now you are making me doubt myself...

Most of the feed stores I've spoken to look at me like I'm an idiot when I ask for non medicated so I'm gathering there just isn't a demand here for it which would explain why its been so hard for me to find it.

Mojo-That's a great point about the ducks not being able to eat if it were medicated!

Oceanseve-I was reading the tag on the bottom. Flock Grower Sunfresh pellets did not have amprolium listed as an active ingredient.

Is yours a different flock grower?

I am not meaning to sound stupid (or at all insulting)-I really want to know, too!

I wish we still had a co-op

It closed a few years ago...

patches - no insult taken I was confused when I kept reading "purina - go get purina!" and yet it was medicated which is why I was beginning to think Amprol wasn't considered a med

purina flock raiser, green bag.

like eastin said - thats the impression I'm getting now, is the feed stores either carry one or the other and can (if they want to) order the other for you. I called three of the dealers listed on purina's website and all said only medicated starter, then went to the closest one and looked at the tags which is when I discovered the flock raiser said amprol too. Like I said before though, I think there isn't a demand for nonmed feed here so everyone just carries the med feed.

Forgive the dumb question but why would the contract cocci being raised on wire and not on the ground?

I'd really like to feed my birds non-medicated feed. After 4 weeks, they'll come out of the brooder and into the tractor outside.

I've been using Purina Sunfresh for nearly 2 years now and just love it. I started out with the medicated chick with my first girls but when it came to the 2nd batch last year I went straight to Flock Raiser because I was raising layers, quail, guineas, plus chicks. They have all done wonderfully well. My roo probably weighs out at 12lbs easy. Not to mention Broomhilda who is nearly a large as he is!

I think, if you aren't growning your own or have access to low cost organic, Sunfresh Flock Raiser is the way to go. I swear by it.

Gosh, where do you live?? Feed prices have come down the past few month. I paid $7.99 for layer feed last week- 50# bag. Can you look for other feed stores? For example, TSC is more expensive than Bomgaars or Orshleins in our area. You might call a local co-op as well.
Good Luck! At $13 you'll be in the hole pretty quickly
