Feed Mix

People years and years ago just fed corn and whatever else they had on hand then at the farm. Scientists now know that that corn and scrap mixture is less than 1/4 of the nutrition chickens really need to thrive. Chickens can LIVE on corn/scratch and kitchen scraps (or pretty much anything really), but they'll thrive on a complete and balanced poultry feed along with a SMALL amount of scraps and scratch/corn.
You can get 2-3 times the amount of eggs when you feed a complete feed instead of just whatever stuff you have on hand at the time... But old farmers and chicken keepers had no knowledge about or access to chicken feeds, so they had to feed just corn and other cheap stuff.
I use Faithway 22% Super Layer. It has a NAMED ingredient list... that's my main reason for using it.:) I just randomly pick to use cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, boiled chicken meat/fat, or even feeder fish so they can get the quality animal protein they crave 2ce a week. I also farm earth worms, so I throw a hand full of them in every Monday and Thursday as their special treat.

Hope this helps!:D

I'm going to look up that feed. It sounds promising. 22 percent though? I though layer should beer more around 16 percent, Oh well. I'm not giving up on my idea of adding some cereal grains though. I just may reduce the amount I add to my mix.
