Feed - OK or moldy?

Never ever feed chicken feed that is too old, out of date, funny color, smells stale, any of it! I recently purchased a small bag of Manna Pro All flock on line. The date of manufacture was last June! I normally never use feed older than 3 months, but I stupidly decided to use thus bag anyway. It smelled a tad old, but otherwise looked ok. Well, 4 days later, I had a bird with Liver Toxicity. She barely survived, took 4 weeks to nurse her back to life. The grains in feed always contain some moisture and are highly susceptible to growing toxins if not stored properly or get too old. Grains have a short shelf life, even if kept proper. Corn especially. Feed toxicity kills. My bird is lucky to be alive, the others were probably not far behind. Its just not worth it. Whats a few bucks to save birds from sure death, throw the bag out when in doubt.

Thats terrible for your bird! Glad she made it!

Yes, I would have gotten another, but being a holiday we don't have that option today! I can purchase a new one tomorrow most likely. However, unless they have gotten some more in, the TSC will only have the two dates as in my picture above. I only bought this bag about 1 week ago, so here's to hoping that I can get something else.

I look at it this way, if it smells good enough for me to eat, it's good enough for my birds. If it smells funky, I won't use it. Rarely does it happen that you get a bad bag of feed, but occasionally it can happen. The first thing I do after opening a bag if feed is smell it. It has to smell fresh and good, have good color and consistency. Be leary of feed with NO smell. Feed loses it's smell after a very long period of time. Chicken feed just doesn't last long, short shelf life.

Put some multi vit in water take some bred and put it in the water, choppe some vegetables (carrots ,lettuce ,cabbage act.) and some boiled eggs, or open a tuna can, mix all together and watch how they feast on that!
