Feed question

Ok so basically I am trying to figure out how to become completely self sufficient, and that would involve not giving layer feed or chick starter, so I was wondering what I can feed my baby chicks to substitute chick starter? And what to feed the older birds to substitute layer feed? A do it has to be something that's raisable or growable.

You'd have to grow a lot of different things.There's not just one thing to feed
