I've been amused to watch my chicks newly purchased from the feed store. They're happy and healthy, but at when I put them to bed in their box inside the house they start to tussle and that got my attention. I have 2, now 2 weeks old. One chick gets under the other and tries to fall asleep, but that pushes her over and she gets upset so they fuss and then do it again.
I realized that they were trying to huddle up in a pile like they do in the boxes at the feed store with all of the other chicks. Being only 2 - they end up just pushing each other around the wall until they get tired and go to sleep. If I put my hand in there they huddle up under it - it is so cute. Now they are outside and scramble against the door at night.
So my resolution is to put a stuffed toy in the crate with them to huddle up against. It's larger then they are and looks like a bird, probably doesn't matter - but cute. I'm hoping they'll nestle up against it and give a 3rd partner for their huddle.
I have 2 other grown hens and these are the first I've gotten as babies. Eventually all will "flock together", but the big girls may have to tolerate the stuffed animal sleeping with them at night!
