how sickly are the chicks from Tractor supply??? Anyone know? I was thinking about picking up 8 or so.

why do people buy chicks from a feed store when they could order direct from the hatchery and order what they want??

Because some of us only have room for 2-3 chickens...not 25.​

i got mine at Tractor Supply because I didnt want to pay shipping and handling and I didnt want more than a few chickens. I got my EE's as pullets and my RIR as mixed. I wanted at least one rooster and picked 3 that I thought were and sure enough...and 2 RIR pullets. If I wanted 15-20 chicks then I may had ordered if they didnt have the breeds I wanted.

ETA, my chicks were perfectly healthy, I also got there first thing in the am as they were unpacking them.

My experience was extacly a 50/50 split when I purchased RIRed Chicks from the local feed store (Southern States). I order from hatchery's mostly but sometimes when you see them you can't resist getting a few. No problem all healthy. Tractor Supply here locally can't keep chicks in the spring because they sell out within hours of being delivered. Somtimes you can get a free 1 gallon waterer if you but chicks from them but eveytime I went by the store they where sold out of chicks this past spring.

We have three stores here that sell chicks. They all offer straight run bins, and pullet bins. It's possible to get a cockeral from the pullet bin but usually you really do end up with pullets. Of course, you pay more for the chicks from the pullet bin. Two of the stores know what breeds they have, the other never knows what it has.

All three stores here will special order for individuals. You just place your order ahead of time and they have your chicks sent with the store chicks. They then separate your chicks when the order arrives. That is a really nice way to get chicks... you can order any number and since yours are coming with the store chicks there are no packing peanuts (many people don't want them) because it's already a huge number together. By ordering ahead of time you also don't have to pay shipping expenses.. the stores cover that cost.

My feed store orders from Ideal. I usually pay the same price at the store that Ideal lists on their website. They order all types of assortments-straight run, all roosters, all pullets, bantam, large, egglayers, meat birds, and just fancies. If there is something specific you want, they will order it for you, often combining orders of customers who only want a small number of birds. It saves the customers from having to worry about a minimum order of 25 chicks. They do not make a lot of money off the chicks, but they say it is worth that investment because then the customers buy wire, feed, and other supplies from them. Of course, I am lucky that I have a wonderful feed store!

The feed store I go to had chicks from the same hatchery where I get mine. He said if I wait until he orders his next chicks, I can order with him and get them cheaper. He has a big book from the hatchery and will order any chick you want. He also said they order all pullets.
