Feed Store Chicks

Where does the feed store get the chicks? I'd assume from one of the well known hatcheries....Welp, Ideal, Cackle, Murray McMurray. Did you contact them? Maybe they've had other losses too and might replace them or return your money. Darn it! Im sorry that you are having such hard luck with those babies.

It probably has to do with many factors from the hatchery, chick handling, traveling, store care etc. I know my feed store is very picky about where they get their chicks from and how they are cared for. I imagine some stores are not.

When you order a few directly from the hatchery they get less stress due to less traveling and then into one quiet space with someone who cares. Though to be honest after watching a few videos on how chicks get treated at various hatcheries

I am amazed the mortality rate is not higher. That episode of dirty jobs where the chicks at McM are being sexed for example or those big machines sorting chicks and eggs.

First batch: 6 wks old
10 str run from TSC-- all survived and are thriving. All appear to be pullets.

Second batch: 5 wks old
10 various pullets from a local feed store
All survived, and are thriving except the one wry neck
All appear to be pullets

Third batch: 5 wks old
6 various pullets from TSC
All survived and are thriving

Fourth batch: 3 wks old
6 pullets from TSC
All surviving and doing well


I know the local feed store chicks came from Mt Healthy. Much cheaper at the feed store though!

TSC hasn't revealed where theirs came from but I'm going to keep calling until someone tells me! hahahah!

I've been well pleased! I don't know if it matters or not, but I picked up my chickies as soon as they arrived at the store. I didn't want lots of people handling them and bringing in diseases and germs!

Oh, and I bought "extras" because everyone in this area kept telling me to expect to lose 1/4th of what you buy! HA! Hope they're going to be ready to eat some eggs!

Mine were vac, but after seeing how they do it and how Mike Rowe (dirty jobs) nearly vac his finger...I'm wondering if a few slip thru without the vac?

I read the article. I have 4 showing signs, if that is what it is. One hopeful thing I read is that 25% is about the highest mortality rate. Right now it looks as if one will die for sure.

I have tried to steer clear of the vaccines, but will be rethinking that next time. This is no fun.

you guys are NO HELP in my fighting the addiction...with all this mortality rate, I'm seriously thinking of getting ONE more just in case...but ugh, I really don't want that many IF they all make it! LOL
