This has been an eye openner day for me. This is my first post, I admit it. I have been in Chicken school reading your posts. Anyway went to the local feed store and bought a 50# of "Layer Mash" yesterday. Went to unload this morning, it was deer corn being passed off as layer mash. However it was the same type of bag accept it was labeled as such. I had been inquiring why for the last 10 mos it has not been labeled. A month or so ago they finally went through a pile of tags and produced one, which I took a picture of. The label and the store have assured me it is a complete feed that there was no need to add to their diet. I have had 1 rooster, and 2 layers die in the last 6 mos. My chickens have been laying far less eating twice the feed. I would give veggies etc.. but figured they were set for protein. I was wrong and my chickens paid the price as did I. Any thoughts on what I should do? Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this? I am so grateful for any input. I have gone to another feed store already today who mixes their own grains to create their well labelled Layer Mash. I keep crying over this. Thank you for listening.

Wow! That is really disheartening that they would do that. If it was me & I wasn't getting any satisfaction from the store manager, I would try to take it up the ladder. Is it a single store or part of a chain? Start making some noise with the higher ups and see if you can get results. What are you looking for in the line of restitution?

Well people are not infallible, we make mistakes and someone at the feed mill tag corn as layer mash. It was a mistake. Of course, once you opened the bag and saw that it was merely corn, you could have caught their mistake and returned it. I'm sure they'd have been grateful for the feedback of their mistake. That is what a GOOD feed mill would have done. Too bad their customer service was so shabby.

Anyhow, we all live and learn. Sometimes finding out about coccidiosis is learned the hard way through the loss of young chicks, or that chicken wire doesn't present predators from killing your chicks, or the 1000 other things that we sometimes learn the hard way. I'm glad you're back on track.

Chi Migwetch! Just to clarify, the feed that was in the bag was exactly the same as what I have been feeding them for the lat 10 mos. I had suspicions when they stopped labeling. This is illegal in the state to not label if more than one ingredient, the other feed store told me. I would not know what to ask for since I cannot prove anything really I use my bank card each time spending alot of money for all my animals there. I feel betrayed. The bag could not be clearer marked Deer Corn, with a huge picture of a deer and nota chicken.
You guys r fast, thank you again!
