Sometimes your addiction bites you in the butt! Oh well, at least you get ALL the chickens you want!

I've had to do that when getting supplies for my aquarium. There have been several instances where I've steered people away from the absolutely wrong fish (no, you don't want that Albino Channel Cat for your 10 gallon aquarium; he'll grow to be four-feet long and make your guppies disappear).

Oh! I do so hope so too!! Gawds! I go totally ape in my mind when I see people make an impulse buy of animals...any animals...let alone chickens! It's not exactly like there are a ton of people on ever street corner, ready to give these fidiots knowledge and guidance every time the come against a problem with their newly acquired chick!

How many helpless little chickies do you suppose die every year because of ignorant twits like this dad and his two kids? Don't get me wrong. I don't think people should be discouraged from raising chickens. I just think they should be well educated before they take the plunge! Egg Newton, I sure hope you managed to give them enough information about keeping chickens to at least give them some second thoughts about jumping in right away, when they're obviously so completely unprepared!

I've always felt that those of us who keep chickens, or any other type of barnyard foul, have an obligation to these wonderful creatures, to educate folks in what is involved with the care and keeping thereof. If they really want to have chickens, tell them to learn everything they can before they make their first purchase! It can't be stressed enough to these fools, that no matter how good their intentions may be, a lack of knowledge can be deadly for the chick.

OK, I'll step off of my soap box now. Sorry if I offended anyone. It's just something that I'm rather passionate about!

And that was when I used to manage a tropical fish emporium years ago. You should have seen the look on people's faces when I told them point blank, that they weren't ready for a tropical salt water set up...."but why not?" "because you can't even keep goldfish alive for three weeks yet! What makes you think you're going to be able to handle the complexities of tropical salts?? "

Yup! Some people can be just as dumb as a box of rocks! They see something pretty that they like and they figure there should be no barriers to them acquiring the object of their desires. So long as they have the money for it, they figure that's all they need! FIDIOTS!

OK, OK, OK, That's the last trip to the soap box! I swear!!!

So did your Rural King allow you to get less then 25.. Our local RK refused to sell less the 25..

Yesterday I found the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and it was ONLY five miles from my favorite feed store.... where I KNEW they had chicks. The car just turned THAT way instead of towards home.

OMG OMG OMG. First, let me say I did NOT come home with anything at all. I had a wonderful time identifying chicks I WOULD have purchased had my brooder been set up at home already. I prefer to choose the chicks about a week old - or even two- already, because I KNOW they'll make it. The feed store had only had chicks for a week and 3 days, with two deliveries (one each Thursday). I want to replace a RIR, and there were two left from the first delivery, so they were 10 days old. I wanted them BAD. No older BR, though, and NO Welsummers. They sold out the first day.

And then there were the ducklings. *melting* There were even some Rouens, which is the breed I'd like to have, if I succumbed to ducklings. I have two backyard goldfish ponds which they'd love.... but there's my chicken-killing dachshund. *sigh* I'm sure he'd do the same with young ducks once they were outside.

The employees were very helpful, and the one young man who went from bin to bin with me totally understood why I wanted older chicks. He warned me about the difference between watering chicks and ducklings, so I was able use some sensible information to resist that particular urge, too.

But I'm gonna call 'em every Thursday to see if there are Welsummers back in. If so, I'll probably go nuts in there. I wanted to fill my pockets with babies.

Today I drove 22 miles to a TSC I've discovered, just to buy Layena, oyster shell and a stall mat (for the new coop I'm building). That particular TC won't get chicks until late March. Whew!

Here's my little prayer from last spring:

Lord grant me the sense to stock up on chicken feed etc. so I can stay OUT of TSC, and every other nearby feed store, during chick days.

When I somehow for some reason show up at TSC anyway please grant me the strength to get what I need and get out WITHOUT even looking at the chick bins. (close ears to loud adorable peeping that fills the store)

When I find myself in front of the the chick bins anyway grant me the strength to look, admire and LEAVE.

When asked by salesperson if I need a box please help me limit myself to a reasonable number.

Please help husband not to notice new arrivals.

Repeat the following spring, or as long as chicks are in the stores.
