If you grab some dried meal worms in your hand, and hold your hand like you're holding an ice cream cone...

The chickens will stick their heads inside the tunnel of your hand to retrieve their treat -rather than pecking too hard at your hand. Which doesn't bother me, but this way is easier for the kids, and the chickens seem to think it's a lot more fun.

You can also just teach your flock good manners regarding being fed - they are entirely trainable, much more so than many give them credit for.
